Premium Distributing Selects Intermec's Wireless Mobile Computers

10/28/2004 - To deliver on its company motto of “Always available, always fresh,” Premium Distributing, a wholesale beverage distributor in San Bernardino, Calif., has selected wireless mobile computers from Intermec Technologies Corp. to streamline its route sales and warehouse operations. Premium Distributing's pre-sales personnel now are able to use Intermec 760 mobile computers with Pocket Salesman RouteBook software from Beverage Solutions Inc. (BSI) and the enhanced Sprint Nationwide PCS Network to check warehouse inventory availability, transmit sales orders, access product information and manage all route sales activities in real-time throughout their route.

“We are looking at schematics of shelf layouts with store managers to make sure our products are positioned properly and checking inventory availability in real time for large orders,” said Premium Distributing Operations Manager John Stange. “Having instant access to any information that’s in our corporate computer system has opened our eyes to a whole new world of what you can do with mobile devices.”

Premium Distributing’s pre-sales force uses BSI’s advanced PocketSalesman RouteBook software to perform paperless routebook functions, enter data required by breweries, analyze inventory sales history and sales forecaset trends, and refine system-recommended product replenishment orders. While in the field, members of Premium’s sales staff use the wireless capabilities of the enhanced Sprint Nationwide PCS Network to receive updated product information and messages about customers from the BSI route accounting system at headquarters. New customer orders are wirelessly sent to headquarters throughout the day, where they are picked and sorted for next-day delivery. Previously, Premium Distributing had only approximately eight hours to prepare all loads after salespeople submitted orders at the end of the day. Wireless order entry gives Premium Distributing extra hours for fulfillment, which the company believes will significantly reduce overtime. The system also is expected to increase sales, because improved fulfillment rates will ensure products are available at stores.

“By receiving orders wirelessly, we know what to expect, so we can do planning,” Stange said. “It gives me much more flexibility in job assignments and allows a preview of real-time sales trends and product availability, allowing us time to react to any shortages. This all helps us get our trucks out on time to deliver all of our products to our retail partners when they want, so we can fulfill our pledge that products are ‘always available’ for our consumers.”

Sprint CDMA 1xRTT network connectivity is built into Intermec 760 mobile computers, which also support 802.11b and Bluetooth wireless connectivity. Premium chose the 760 because it offered the Windows Mobile 2003 operating system, an integrated bar code laser scanner, easy-to-use numeric keypad and a large, color screen.
