10/25/2004 - Express Logic, Inc., the worldwide leader in royalty-free real-time operating systems (RTOS), announced that its ThreadX® RTOS will power three new HP Photosmart digital cameras – the HP Photosmart R707, R607 and R507.
The incorporation of advanced features in digital cameras requires a small, fast real-time operating system that is able to manage multiple application threads efficiently. The HP Photosmart R707, R607 and R507 feature HP Real Life technologies – a series of technical advancements that make it nearly impossible to take a bad picture – including in-camera red-eye removal, Adaptive Lighting Technology, HP Image Advice and in-camera panorama preview.
“HP’s goal with the introduction of the HP Photosmart R707, R607 and R507 digital cameras was to deliver solutions that offered superior quality and ease of use in a sleek, compact design. This required sophisticated technology,” commented Dave Staudacher, camera firmware architect, Imaging and Printing Group, HP. “To effectively manage this, HP needed an RTOS that was simple, as well as fast. Express Logic's ThreadX and FileX fit the bill.”
Occupying as little as 6KB of ROM, ThreadX successfully met the size and speed requirements necessary for the camera’s consumer interface, offering instant-boot-up and context-switching times of less than one microsecond., Express Logic also met the need for a small memory footprint with its FileX with MS-DOS FAT file system compatibility, which occupies a scant 5KB of ROM, ThreadX manages all application software in these HP cameras on an embedded 32-bit microprocessor. ThreadX is completely royalty-free, keeping manufacturing costs to a bare minimum. ThreadX is efficient, enabling performance goals to be met without requiring a faster, more expensive processor.
“We’re once again honored to have been selected by HP as the RTOS to power their latest cameras,” commented William E. Lamie, President of Express Logic. “ThreadX has the technology, small size and efficiency needed by HP’s Photosmart digital cameras, and its ease of use makes it especially attractive for development of products requiring rapid time to market.”
Used in over 100 million electronic products worldwide, ThreadX is one of the most widely deployed RTOSes in the industry. ThreadX and FileX are provided in full source code form and are licensed per project, with no run-time royalties, starting at $12,500 for a single-product license.
