SPIRIT Unveils Distortion Free Noise Cancellation for Portable Devices

10/20/2004 - SPIRIT (www.spiritdsp.com) announces Distortion Free Noise Cancellation solution targeted for portable devices and eliminating noise in up to -10dB conditions. The software allows significant suppression of any background noise and provides high quality of output speech. To enhance mobile speech quality SPIRIT offers both single- and two-microphone NC solutions.

SPIRIT Single-Mic NC is based on the proprietary Speech Enhancement technology. This guarantees speech quality 0.3-0.4 PESQMOS (according to ITU-T P.862 Recommendation) better than what is offered by typical NC implementations currently available on the market.

To achieve even better results, Single-Mic solution can be easily upgraded into Two-Mic NC by adding a second microphone to the system. In this case one microphone is placed near the speaker and picks up both the desired signal and the background noise. The other one is located at a distance from the user and picks up the noise only. By subtracting the signals (using an adaptive filter to achieve the appropriate delay), the noise signal will be cancelled out and the speech signal will be clean.

"It is possible to improve sound quality and eliminate the annoying noise with no damage to the original speech content. This is well beyond the abilities of typical single mic NC solutions" - comments Andrew Sviridenko, founding CEO of SPIRIT.

Operating with low SNR (up to -10dB), the software suppresses any external noises, including non-stationary noise, such as music, background speech, etc.. SPIRIT's Noise Cancellation can be also implemented in other devices used in noisy locations, such as intercoms, set-top boxes, videoconferencing applications, VoIP solutions, voice recognition pre-processors, and other voice related applications where it is vital to significantly reduce the background noise level.
