Broadcom 54g Enables Built-In 802.11g Capabilities in HP Printers

10/15/2004 - Broadcom Corporation (Nasdaq: BRCM), a leading provider of highly-integrated semiconductor solutions enabling broadband communications, announced that its popular 54gTM technology has been embedded into select HP printers, the industry's first with built-in IEEE 802.11g connectivity. Utilizing Broadcom's maximum performance Wi-Fi® solution, the HP Photosmart 2700 All-in-One series, HP Officejet 7410 All-in-One and HP Deskjet 6840 Color Inkjet Printer provide a fast, convenient way for consumers and small businesses to share printing and scanning functionality between one or more PCs on a wireless network.

"These printers are the first of many compelling platforms that extend the freedom and flexibility of Wi-Fi to consumer devices," said Jeff Abramowitz, Senior Director of Marketing for Broadcom's Home and Wireless Networking Business Unit. "Broadcom's wireless LAN business has continued to outpace its competitors, benefiting from the increased adoption of Wi-Fi in embedded applications such as wireless-enabled printers and broadband modems and the opportunities these new devices create for expanded wireless connectivity in the home."

"Printers are the next logical step in the wireless computing revolution," said Joe Keller, home networking strategist, Imaging and Printing Group, HP. "By collaborating with Broadcom, HP was the first to deliver printers with built-in 802.11g, providing high-speed wireless connections that make it easy for customers to share printers on their home networks and print from practically anywhere in the house."

54g is Broadcom's premier implementation of the IEEE 802.11g standard, enabling printers and other products to connect wirelessly with maximum speed, reach and security. Broadcom has now shipped over 30 million 54g chipsets, making 54g the most popular Wi-Fi technology for homes, businesses and public hot spots. In addition to appearing in the leading brands of 802.11g access points, notebook and desktop PCs, network adapters and broadband modems, 54g continues to gain momentum in a variety of new wireless devices and applications.

For example, Apple Computer recently embedded 54gTM technology into its new AirPort® Express, the world's first 802.11g mobile base station. The ultra-compact design utilizes Broadcom's highly integrated wireless LAN processor to deliver maximum portability and convenience for wireless users. The device also takes advantage of the robust security features of Broadcom's OneDriverTM software to protect AirPort networks against unauthorized use.
