Microcross, Cogent Announce ARM 920T Embedded Linux Development Kit

10/14/2004 - Microcross and Cogent Computer Systems, Inc. are pleased to announce the release of an ARM 920T Embedded Linux development Kit for the CSB337 OEM development board. The Embedded Linux distribution is based on Kernel version 2.6 and was ported by Cadenux LLC. Microcross has integrated their Visual X-Tools IDE and Visual GDB debugger products as an integrated solution out-of-the box, open-source, ready-to-run.

With the Embedded Linux edition of Visual X-ToolsTM toolsuite, CSB337 Embedded Linux Board Support Package (BSP), and Cogent Computer Systems OEM development board, a developer can rev-up his or her design and get to market faster than ever before without incurring high cost for the kit or royalties like those of competing solutions. The Embedded Linux BSP includes serial console I/O and Ethernet drivers, a TCP/IP network stack, system timer, and watchdog driver. Optional drivers are available and include USB, real-time clock, and compact flash. Microcross, Cadenux and Cogent offer a complete embedded development solution -- open source, royalty-free, ready-to-runTM.

The Cogent CSB337 features the Atmel AT91RM9200 (180 Mhz ARM 920T core) processor with 32 MB SDRAM and 8 MB Flash. Other features of the hardware include the following:

  • Dual RS-232 Ports and Single USB 2.0 Device Port
  • Dual USB 2.0 Host Ports
  • Integrated 10/100 Ethernet Interface
  • Infineon SAK82C900 Dual CAN via SPI
  • MMC/SDIO Card Socket
  • JTAG and 16-Bit ETM Debug Ports
  • Compact 3.20" x 3.50" Board
  • Epson S1D13706 LCD Controller supports up to 320x240 TFT, HR-TFT and STN Displays
  • Open Source Micromonitor Boot ROM
  • Stacking Headers provide a Male Header (top) and Female socket (bottom) for ease of use
  • Low Profile Version (Male Headers on top only) also available for OEM use
  • Development Kits include Power Supply, Cables and Breakout Board

"Embedded development kits with the Embedded Linux BSP software components are available under the General Public License (GPL). Most important of all, software created that executes on the target processor Linux OS will not place undue restrictions on embedded applications. In other words, applications can be developed to run on the Embedded Linux under the Lesser GPL license; therefore, commercial companies are not required to 'open source' their proprietary applications when linking with shared library modules. Embedded Linux is a great alternative to RTOSs when hard-realtime is not a requirement. With the advances of processor speed in today’s embedded processors, close-enough in meeting a scheduled deadline may meet your system requirement," said James Calvin, President of Worldwide Sales at Microcross.

"The complete OEM embedded development kit, including a Cogent single board computer, Microcross toolsuite and Embedded Linux BSP provides a rapid application development solution for engineers to jump start their project without incurring the typical high-costs and product restrictions associated with commercial RTOSs and network solutions. This solution provides a huge savings in time for those who are contemplating rolling their own Embedded Linux BSPs," said Michael Kelly, Vice President Engineering / Marketing at Cogent Computer Systems, Incorporated.

Preconfigured Embedded Linux Board Support Packages (BSPs) with the Visual X-Tools IDE and Visual GDB debugger are priced at $1999 per seat. The CSB337 OEM module and breakout board are priced together at $978. A developer can get started with a complete kit with tools, Embedded Linux BSP (complete with source code, toolsuite and build instructions), and a development board (including an OEM module and breakout board) for under $3,000. Microcross offers free 30-days of setup support. Optional Tech Support Contract (TSC) is also available.
