Atmel Introduces Two New Physical Layer Stand-Alone Serial ATA Chips

10/14/2004 - Atmel® Corporation (Nasdaq: ATML), a global leader in the development and fabrication of advanced semiconductor solutions, announced the availability of two new PHY (Physical Layer) stand-alone chips from the Serial ATA (SATA) product family targeted for PC and a range of storage applications such as SATA Host/Device Controllers, Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID) and Network Attached Storage (NAS) and SAN Storage Area Network. Other applications include Router Switches which can also be integrated in consumer electronic products such as set-top-boxes. The AT78C5081 is a single port and AT78C5090 is a dual port Serial ATA PHY, which both exceed the parameters necessary to be compliant with the Serial ATA Gen1 revision 1.0 specification therefore providing a very high-speed data transmission at 1.5Gbps.

In addition to the availability of the AT78C5081 and AT78C5090 as stand-alone solutions, Atmel is offering the SATA PHY (Physical Layer) core for integration into custom SoC (System-on-Chip) on a chip for electronics equipment manufacturers. Atmel's Serial ATA product family strategy is to provide a complete solution and increased design flexibility by integrating the PHY, Link Layer, and Transport Layer for host or target mode for multiple products including PCI, IDE or PCIX for storage, and networking. The benefits for the system design engineer from this approach is the capability to include features that may increase their ability for improve their time-to-market as well as differentiate them from the competitor.

The AT78C5081 is designed in 0.18 micron and AT78C5090 is designed in 0.13 micron. Both chips are proven on silicon accompanied by Intellectual Property (IP) which is available as a Free SoC IP, for companies wishing to develop their SoC chip with Atmel's Network Storage group. By teaming up with Atmel, system design engineers can eliminate the NRE and royalty charges associated with traditional SoC designs. Atmel's Serial ATA Physical Layer provides all the features and requirements of SATA-standard for up to 8 Channels integration.

"Atmel Network Storage Products BU is dedicated to design high performance products for PC, networking and consumer products, by making the Serial ATA Physical Layer available as a stand-alone product in the market we are able to provide more flexibility for new designs in PC and Network products; in addition, to participating into consumer electronic products, said Max Bathaee, Sr. Marketing Manager for Network Storage Products at Atmel.

AT78C5081 is available in TQFP 100 pin package. Pricing is based on volume shipment or $1.95 for 10K and below volume. AT78C5090 is available in QFP 120 pin package. Pricing is based on volume shipment or $2.95 for 10K and below volume. Both products are available in a variety of packages based on customer requirements.
