eNeo Labs Provides OSGI Device Driver for Hometronic System

10/11/2004 - Honeywell’s Hometronic System, part of the inHaus- project, is using a new OSGI Device Driver developed by eNeo Labs. Successful eNeo Labs, Honeywell and InHaus engineers’ collaboration makes the Hometronic Home Automation System OSGI compliant.

The Intelligent House Innovation Center (inHaus) in Duisburg, Germany is a joint effort led by the Fraunhofer Society for applied research in cooperation with numerous partners from university, international and national business. It is devoted to the research and development of innovative products and systems-solutions in the area of “Smart Homes” and “Ambient Intelligence” systems.

The test and demonstration basis of the project is the inHaus facility in Duisburg, Germany. This facility of 1.400m2 includes a smart home test lab, a service workshop, a networked test car and a networked test garden. At inHaus everything is networked, from solar panels on the roof to the garden sprinkler. The main concept of inHaus is to create new functionality and related benefits by the integration of suitable single devices to so called system packets for application segments under the OSGI Service Platform. One example is the integrated system control, the replacing of the numerous control units by one notepad or a PDA.

One of the leading partners is Honeywell who is providing their advanced home automation system, Hometronic. This system takes care of the heating, lights, roller-shutters, sunshades and a lot more. One of the main advantages of Hometronic is that it works without wires. eNeo Labs, a leading Spanish company in the Connected Home Market, has developed the OSGI driver that allows the Honeywell systems to be fully integrated in the OSGI Service Platform. This integration enables interoperation with other vendor home automation systems as well as the rest of equipment of the networked life experience at the inHaus system network. Another benefit of this outcome is the possibility of using a web interface for the remote control & access, and also for the remote management of the system.

Dr. Viktor Grinewitschus, head of technology and innovation activities of the inHaus Center of Fraunhofer Institute: “During the last months the engineers of the InHaus Project, Honeywell and eNeo Labs have been working together in this integration. The result has been very successful and as of today is fully operating at the inHaus in Duisburg”.

“The software developed by eNeo Labs enables the integration of our Hometronic home automation system into any OSGI complaint framework, which is an important enhancement in our system”, said Dieter Grossmann, Director Field Marketing Homes Business of Honeywell.

Javier Zamora, General Manager of eNeo Labs: “Our residential gateway IPbox is compatible with Honeywell systems and we already have installed both in Spain, but the opportunity to collaborate with the inHaus Project has been very useful for us. We are proud to have a contact to this leading project in Europe”.

About Fraunhofer Society for Applied Research
The inHaus-Center is a Project of the Fraunhofer-Society for Applied Research. Fraunhofer is the 2nd biggest research organisation worldwide. With its 56 institutes and the 15.000 empoyees in Germany, Europe but also in Asia and the USA Fraunhofer has had a budget of about 1,2 billion € in 2003. The research activities are spreaded from Microelectronics, Informatics to Biotechnology. Mostly Fraunhofer is developing know-how in form of intellectual property and innovative product prototypes in order of the private industry. But also Fraunhofer is included in many national and international research projects funded by the governments in combination with the industry in a public-private partnership concept.
