10/11/2004 - HP announced a new comprehensive framework that is specifically designed to help network and service providers adapt to the market forces that are re-shaping the $219 billion communications industry.(1)
The Advanced Open Telecom Platform (AOTP) advances HP's strategy to leverage modular, standards-based technologies, enhance them to meet the stringent requirements of telecom operating environments and build them into the heart of voice, data and media networks.
HP AOTP has as its foundation the industry's most complete array of commercial and carrier-grade platforms (rack-mount, blade and custom), but it is much more than hardware. HP AOTP is a comprehensive framework of enabling technologies that incorporates a portfolio of operating systems including carrier-grade Linux, telecom network software such as HP OpenCall and OpenView, and SAF-compliant management software. It also includes platform testing and validation, consulting and integration services, global sales and customer support, and a large network of tightly linked solution partners.
As part of its investment to create AOTP, HP also plans to bring to market a new telecom-specific blade server that is based on the emerging industry standard, called Advanced Telecom Computing Architecture (AdvancedTCA®), based on Intel® processors.
HP AOTP brings commercial off-the-shelf technology (COTS) to telecom industry

Operators need low-cost, agile networks to deliver new personalized services
Operators today must be able to create, deploy and manage, not just a few "killer apps" for a mass market, but hundreds of niche voice and data services that are personalized to fit individual lifestyles - possibly for only limited time periods. For this new market, operators must migrate away from closed, proprietary network infrastructures, which are too cumbersome and too costly for today's fast-moving and highly competitive markets.

New AdvancedTCA blade server key component of HP AOTP
HP's new blade server is a significant addition to the HP AOTP. As a complement to HP's leadership in the blade market, the new AdvancedTCA blade server is specifically designed to meet the needs of network and service providers. HP, as the first Premier member of the Intel Communications Alliance, is working closely with Intel to drive AdvancedTCA as the standard for telecom blade computing.

The new AdvancedTCA blade offering from HP is planned to include an ATCA chassis, server blades based on Intel 32-bit and 64-bit Itanium processors, plus a collection of accessory blades for storage, input/output and networking. Linux will be the preferred operating system. HP will continue to support servers based on the current PICMG® standard during development of the AdvancedTCA products.
