10/7/2004 - Vitesse Semiconductor Corporation (NASDAQ: VTSS) announced the VSC874, a highly-integrated 10 Gbps Queue Manager with an integrated SPI-4.2 interface that provides the industry with a 20% cost savings per Gbps. The VSC874 is capable of handling traffic at up to 16 Gbps, a speed intended to support OC-192 and 10 Gb Ethernet line rates. The flexible functionality of the device also gives OEMs vital advantages in technology reuse and time-to-revenue. The VSC874 is a member of Vitesse's successful GigaStream intelligent switch fabric family.
By using the integrated SPI-4.2 interface, the VSC874 seamlessly connects to the Intel® IXP2800 network processor, CPUs, Traffic Mangers, Framers, and MACs for 10G line card applications in systems scaling to 160 Gbps when used in conjunction with the VSC882 crossbar switch device. The combination provides for a complete switch fabric solution that addresses the convergence of system designs used in LAN, WAN, and SAN environments.
The VSC874 can also be used in small-scale, direct-connect configurations to maximize performance, reduce development complexity, and achieve the industry's best-in-class cost per Gbps compared to equivalent merchant silicon fabric devices. This allows expansion into new, emerging IP Appliance and Media Gateway markets, while providing enhanced capability in traditional market segments such as 3G Wireless, Edge/Access Routers, and Multi-service Provisioning Platforms (MSPP).

This solution is another milestone in Vitesse's goal to incorporate industry standard interfaces into its switch fabrics. The VSC874 provides a migration path to Vitesse's ExStreamTM Advanced Switching Interconnect product family enabling the industry's adoption of modular communication platforms.
System Perspective – Flexible Functionality Supports Multiple Fabric Topologies
The VSC874, with its packet-based interface and on-chip segmentation and reassembly, can be combined with a network processor (NPU) and physical layer devices (PHYs) to provide a high-throughput, non-blocking switching system. The VSC874 offers two basic connection topologies for full crossbar switch applications and reduced mesh connection configurations to provide the most cost-effective switch fabric solution to fit the application.
There are two SPI-4.2 functional interface modes: "Packet Mode" and "Framer Mode" to provide a highly flexible system packet interface functionality. The VSC874, configured in Packet mode and interfaced to "intelligent" devices such as NPUs, is capable of programmable data manipulation involving the separation of traffic flows into separate service classes, as required in 3G Wireless and MSPP applications.
In Framer mode, the VSC874 provides for routing of packet and cell flows associated with PHY devices, such as Framers and MACs, containing a SPI-4.2 interface. This enables flexible system deployment of smaller scale systems at a lower cost per Gbps, ideal for IP Appliance and Media Gateway applications.
"From our discussions with current GigaStream customers and leading OEMs in identifying next-generation switch fabric architecture requirements, it was evident that there was a need to scale in both directions," said Gary Lee, director of Intelligent Switch Fabric marketing at Vitesse. "The VSC874 satisfies two major design requirements: current GigaStream systems can be upgraded with 10G line cards, and smaller systems have a low cost fabric for interconnecting a handfull of powerful communications processors."
Packaging, Pricing and Availability
The VSC874 comes in a 672-pin Super FC-BGA, 27 mm x 27 mm, 1.0 mm ball pitch package and is priced at $155 USD per unit in volume. Alpha partner samples will be available in November 2004. Additional technical information, evaluation vehicles, and models are available today from Vitesse.
