Elitegroup, Phoenix Target Mobile PC Users with Productivity Applications

10/4/2004 - Phoenix Technologies Ltd. (Nasdaq:PTEC) announced that Elitegroup Computer Systems (ECS), the world's leading producer of motherboards with production reaching 24 million units in 2002, has committed to distribute the Phoenix Technologies FirstWare(R) Assistant pre-OS software applications in its leading-edge DeskNote portable desktop (notebook) computer systems and multimedia products that combine outstanding features, performance and value.

ECS will immediately begin shipping Phoenix FirstWare Assistant on all ECS DeskNote notebook PCs.

Phoenix FirstWare Assistant provides mobile professionals with "instant-on" access to encrypted and password protected critical business information from Microsoft Outlook(R) including email, calendar information, phone numbers in only a few seconds, at the touch of a button -- without booting the Operating System (OS).

Phoenix FirstWare Assistant essentially turns a mobile PC into a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA), without the need to carry a second device or to synchronize data. And if Outlook fails to boot, the user still has access to recent data because Phoenix FirstWare Assistant runs in support, yet independent, of Microsoft Windows and Outlook. Phoenix FirstWare Assistant is a simple, effective way to ensure that mobile professionals always have access to critical information on their mobile PC products. Now they can easily find conference call numbers on the way to the office, or a colleague's contact number, or flight information, or a recent email document.

"ECS is pleased to expand its commitment to Phoenix Technologies with the addition of the Phoenix FirstWare applications to our family of notebook PCs," said Kevin Yang, Vice President, General Manager of R&D Division I, ECS. "Phoenix's leadership in developing secure and trust-enabled products means clear benefits for our customers in terms of greater productivity while on the road."

About Phoenix FirstWare Applications
Today, people spend an increasing amount of time away from the desk and office. In the U.S. alone, more than 55 million employees are on the road at least 20 percent of their time. Workdays continue to lengthen, business travel constantly increases, and the daily commute becomes more important work time. As a result, efficiency and productivity enhancements are essential for enterprise success.

Phoenix FirstWare applications cover all aspects of starting, managing, securing, maintaining, recovering and shutting down PCs and other intelligent digital devices. Because Phoenix FirstWare applications are built-in to a PC's hard drive -- either during the manufacturing process or as an add-on to an existing system -- they are protected from security attacks and can operate independently from the operating system.

Phoenix FirstWare Assistant is a Phoenix Core Managed Environment (cMETM)-certified application, which allows FirstWare Assistant to extend Microsoft Outlook PIM data and email to the rapid-on, secure Phoenix cME space. With the touch of a button, mobile professionals can view this encrypted and password protected essential data in the pre-boot environment -- including calendar, contacts, tasks and email. Phoenix FirstWare Assistant allows the mobile PC OEM to increase the value of product lines, raise margins and differentiate offerings, while reinforcing your brand in the Phoenix Core Managed Environment.

"By using Phoenix FirstWare applications, ECS will be able to expand and differentiate its products and services, while increasing customer loyalty," said Michael D. Goldgof, Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Phoenix Technologies Corporate Marketing and Products Division. "Our FirstWare applications continue to gain momentum with top PC OEMs, ODMs, integrators and system builders, who can add quality and reliability to their offerings, deliver information to users that is encrypted and password protected, while reducing manufacturing and support costs. Together, we help leading companies such as ECS create and deliver products that are 'Secure from the start.'"

Phoenix FirstWare Assistant readily supports English, Chinese, Korean and Japanese and German languages. Additional localizations can be readily prepared, as needed, in a matter of weeks.
