1/22/2004 - Marvell® (NASDAQ: MRVL), a technology leader in the development of extreme broadband communications and storage solutions, announced that it is entering the power management market with the world’s most advanced, integrated Digital Signal Processing (DSP) based mixed-signal solutions. This industry breakthrough revolutionizes performance, form-factor and battery life in a wide range of electronic devices including PCs, Consumer and Portable products.
Power consumption is becoming a critical issue as semiconductor devices continue to move down the geometry curve coupled with higher levels of integration and speed. Today’s systems utilizing smaller geometry devices are faced with exponential increases in electrical current consumption. Traditional linear LDO (Low Drop Out) solutions are quickly becoming impractical due to reducing voltages and increasing currents. Conventional switching power management solutions are using brute force techniques such as simply increasing size of passive components to keep up with the increasing currents. The use of larger passive components is inhibiting further development of smaller form factor electronic products.
Marvell has developed a breakthrough in power management technology using an innovative DSP based solution that allows for the use of extremely small passive components. By utilizing smart silicon technology as opposed to conventional analog solutions, Marvell provides highly scalable solutions that are unique to the industry and solve today’s critical problems.
Another challenge faced by portable products today is that battery technology has not scaled as rapidly as semiconductor technology due to limited advancements in chemical technology. This divergence is creating the need for superior power management solutions. With unparalleled high efficiency, Marvell power management solutions extend battery life to new levels. Higher efficiency also enhances thermal profile thus eliminating or significantly reducing the need for cooling mechanisms such as fans.
This breakthrough not only delivers unprecedented form factor and efficiency benefits, it also features many unique design techniques which make Marvell’s power management solutions ‘plug and play’ for the first time in the industry. The ease of use coupled with superior programmability enables system designers to shorten design cycles and eliminate complexity often associated with power design.
Due to easy and flexible programmability features, designers can use each Marvell part number for multiple applications. Conventional solutions require end users to either maintain an inventory of a large number of product skews or be forced to order specific skews with long lead times. Marvell’s ‘plug and play’ devices minimize the number of product skews and mitigate issues associated with managing large inventories of products.
“Marvell is entering into the power management market at a time when conventional solutions are running out of steam and a disruptive technology is required.” said Dr. Sehat Sutardja, Chairman and CEO. “Our OEM and ODM partners are excited to see this fundamental shift in power design paradigm. We are greatly encouraged by the strong acceptance of this revolutionary approach and the breadth of design wins that we have achieved in such a short time frame.”
“This is a very important milestone for Marvell,” continued Dr. Sutardja. “This marks the first in what will be a wave of innovative off-the-shelf general purpose mixed-signal and linear components that we will be introducing for broad markets. The addition of standard components will now expand our reach into both vertical and horizontal markets and take our products to thousands of customers. Due to the wide range of applications served by such products, we will now begin to serve markets where unit volumes are measured in the billions.”
