1/22/2004 - Agilent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: A) announced that its E-pHEMT (enhancement-mode pseudomorphic high-electron-mobility transistor) power amplifier (PA) modules for CDMA and GSM mobile handsets have been selected as a 2003 Product of the Year by the editorial board of Electronic Products magazine.
Each year, the editors of Electronic Products select a few outstanding new products from the thousands introduced. These products represent significant advances in technology or its application, a decided innovation in design, or a substantial gain in price performance. Product descriptions can be found in Electronic Products' January 2004 issue and on www.electronicproducts.com.
Agilent's new E-pHEMT PA modules provide the industry's best power-added efficiency (PAE) for CDMA and GSM phones, and allow manufacturers to increase mobile phone battery life by as much as 15 percent, a critical feature in today's multifunction phones. Higher PAE increases battery life, especially "talk time." Agilent estimates that the E-pHEMT PA modules increase talk time by as much as 30 minutes on a single battery charge.
"Agilent's E-pHEMT PA modules exemplify the attributes of our award winners: They are unique and technically advanced devices that enable engineers to create feature-rich mobile handsets with longer battery life," said Todd Christenson, publisher of Electronic Products. "The Agilent PA modules were judged to be among the best of the best by our editorial board."
"We're pleased to receive this prestigious award from Electronic Products. It confirms the tremendous reception mobile phone manufacturers have given our E-pHEMT PA modules," said Bryan Ingram, vice president and general manager of Agilent's Wireless Semiconductor Division. "What elevates Agilent's PA modules above the rest is their industry-best power-added efficiency, which allows our customers to offer either additional features while maintaining battery life, or phones with much longer battery life."
Of the CDMA PA modules, the ACPM-7813 addresses the 800 MHz dual-mode band, and the ACPM-7833 operates in the 1900 MHz (PCS) range for handsets and wireless data terminal applications. The CDMA PA modules offer an industry-best PAE rating of 40 percent, with E-pHEMT technology that requires only a single positive power supply. The ACPM-7891 PA module is targeted at tri-band GSM/GPRS phones, and offers superior PAE of up to 60 percent in GSM band and 56 percent in both DCS and PCS bands.
Agilent E-pHEMT PA modules have been designed into 15 mobile terminal platforms for both CDMA and GSM air interfaces, including phones from two of the top three handset manufacturers. Further information about Agilent's RF semiconductor products is available at www.agilent.com/view/rf.
