1/14/2004 - Green Hills Software, the technology leader in real-time operating systems (RTOS) and embedded development tools, announced that Electronic Products Magazine chose Green Hills Software's TimeMachine 4-Debugger as a "2003 Product of the Year Award" winner. The TimeMachine was the only embedded software product in this year's winner's circle.
The TimeMachine debugger is the first to provide developers with complete source code level visibility into an application's precise behavior both forward and backward in time. TimeMachine allows C, C++ and Ada developers to run and step an application back in time after a failure occurs, allowing easy identification of its root cause. This avoids the tedious and open-ended process of trial-and-error debugging required by previous generations of temporally-challenged debuggers.
Gary Jensen, development tools editor of Electronic Products explained, "From the thousands of products introduced in 2003, the editors of Electronic Products chose the most outstanding. The selections are based on significant advances in technology or its application, a decided innovation in design or a substantial gain in price-performance. In the January 2004 issue, the Green Hills Software TimeMachine Debugger was selected as a 2003 'Product of the Year' winner."
"Real-time embedded developers often struggle with intermittent bugs that are difficult to track down," said David Kleidermacher, vice president of engineering at Green Hills Software. "In fact, most products are shipped with known bugs that cannot be fixed due to their transience. TimeMachine makes it easy to eliminate the most insidious bugs, enabling developers to achieve total reliability and get to market months earlier."
TimeMachine exploits the power of the Green Hills SuperTrace probe that collects up to a gigabyte of trace data, more than 20 times the typical trace depth of other probes. SuperTrace works with trace ports running at speeds beyond 300 MHz, collecting trace data while the CPU executes at full speed. The TimeMachine software then analyzes the trace data to reconstruct the code execution steps that the processor followed. "Once a bug has been trapped in the SuperTrace Probe, TimeMachine makes it easy to eradicate the bug," concluded Kleidermacher.
