1/14/2004 - Fujitsu Transaction Solutions Inc. announces two new products for retail store systems that extend the company's "SmartPoS" concept introduced in 2003. The new TeamPoS 2000 M point-of-sale terminal and SmartPoSLCD color display emphasize manageability to reduce cost of ownership for retailers.
The TeamPoS 2000 M and peripherals' manageability features allow hardware components to be managed either on-site or remotely by Fujitsu's infrastructure management services organization or value-added resellers that provide services to retailers. The TeamPoS 2000 M is the general retail industry's first point-of-sale system to incorporate the Intel Pentium M processor.
Fujitsu made the announcement at the National Retail Federation's 93rd Annual Convention & Expo, Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, New York City Jan. 11-14, 2004, Fujitsu Booth 1335.
"The SmartPoS solution is all about helping retailers build smarter stores," said Tom Juliano, senior vice president of marketing for Fujitsu Transaction Solutions. "The idea in reducing cost is not just lowering the price - it's about reducing cost over the lifetime of the retailer's IT assets and managing assets intelligently.
"'Smart' terminals and peripherals that give the retailer, or the services supplier, data about the status of the device's lifecycle can help retailers manage their IT assets to drive out cost and inefficiency. Service calls can be planned to avoid store down-time. Devices can be repaired or replaced when it's convenient for the retailer. The overall result is relentless cost reduction."
SmartPoS solution components
Fujitsu is introducing several new products as part of the SmartPoS solution, including the TeamPoS 2000 M with its new, optional TeamUSB controller; and the SmartPoSLCD display. The solution also can include the SmartScan9950 scanner and other SmartPoS Peripherals such as keyboards, LCD displays and printers.
TeamPoS 2000 M
The latest model in Fujitsu's TeamPoS line of point-of-sale terminals, the TeamPoS 2000 M is based on the Intel Pentium M processor. The TeamPoS 2000 M is designed for easy remote management to reduce total cost of ownership, like other SmartPoS Peripherals Fujitsu introduced in early 2003.
The Pentium M processor and associated chipsets enable systems to be configured with fewer components to support such features as dual independent displays, typically used for marketing to store customers. As a result, it offers increased performance, greater reliability and can be economically upgraded to help retailers drive down costs and improve customer satisfaction.
"Systems based on Pentium M technology will be backward-compatible while offering retailers an expanded means of growing their POS capabilities into the future," said Larry Fandel, head of product operations for Fujitsu Transaction Solutions. "This will effectively protect their investment and help them drive down their total cost of ownership over a longer product life cycle."
"The Pentium M processor is a low power solution that delivers exceptional performance for embedded applications such as POS." said Ton Steenman, general manager, Embedded Intel Architecture division. "POS systems based on Intel? Pentium? M technology provide retailers with exciting new opportunities that can enhance the in-store shopping experience with rich graphic displays and faster check-out."
Complementing the TeamPoS 2000 M, Fujitsu's optional new TeamUSB controller features up to seven powered USB ports to accommodate the retail market's rapidly growing preference for USB peripheral devices.
Rounding out Fujitsu's POS product line is a new SmartPoSLCD color display.
The industry-standard 15-inch screen is larger than typical 12-inch POS terminal screens. The larger size makes it easier for the operator to read and displays larger buttons for touch-screen applications to reduce operator error.
The display can function in either digital or analog mode and features an optional magnetic-stripe reader. The exterior features a new slate-blue finish to blend with contemporary retail interiors.
Like other SmartPoS solution products, the SmartPoSLCD will support advanced diagnostic and asset management information designed to reduce support costs. Fewer cables also contribute to reducing support costs.
