Microchip Unveils Faster 8- and 16-Kbit Serial EEPROMs with Lower Current

1/9/2004 - Microchip Technology Inc., a leading provider of microcontroller and analog semiconductors, announced new serial EEPROM devices that give designers an effective combination of fast operating speed and short write time at low current, enabling users to quickly and efficiently access large amounts of data.

Microchip’s 8-Kbit 25XX080A/B and 16-Kbit 25XX160A/B are SPITM bus-compatible serial EEPROM devices that feature a maximum clock speed of 10 MHz, a write time of 5 milliseconds, and a write current of 3 milliamps. These devices are available in small and thin packages, such as the MSOP, for applications with limited space requirements. Standard packaging is also available, including TSSOP, PDIP and SOIC.

The 25XX080A/B and 25XX160A/B serial EEPROMs are available in two voltage ranges (1.8V-5.5V for “AA” versions such as 25AA080B, and 2.5V-5.5V for “LC” versions such as 25LC080B). Both industrial temperature grade (-40?C to +85?C), and extended temperature grade (-40?C to +125?C) are also available. These devices all feature self-timed ERASE and WRITE cycles, built-in write protection, and high reliability with 200-year data retention and one million erase/write cycles. They also feature Microchip’s low-power CMOS technology.

Both 16- and 32-byte page sizes are available, providing customers maximum flexibility for their design. The “A” versions (such as 25LC080A and 25LC160A) feature 16-byte page size, and the “B” versions (such as 25LC080B and 25LC160B) feature 32-byte page size.

The new series of devices is also compatible with Microchip’s SEEVAL® 32 Serial EEPROM Designer’s Kit. This low-cost development system enables designers to quickly and easily develop a robust and reliable serial EEPROM-based application, while significantly reducing the time required for system integration and hardware/software debug.

Pricing in 10,000-unit quantities is $0.52 each for the 25xx080A and 25xx080B devices and $0.54 each for the 25XX160A and the 25XX160B devices. Samples and volume production are available now.
