Accelerated Technology Debuts Microtec Compiler with ColdFire Support

1/7/2004 - Accelerated Technology®, the Embedded Systems Division of Mentor Graphics Corporation (NASDAQ: MENT), announced a new version of the Microtec® C and C++ compilation tools for embedded developers using the ColdFire Family of 32-bit microprocessors. Embedded developers now have a complete software solution available from one vendor to build their embedded applications from conception to deployment.

This release of the Microtec compiler suite specifically for the ColdFire MCF5206, MCF5206e, MCF5272, MCF5282, MCF5307 and MCF5407 microprocessors includes a compiler, assembler and linker. The highly optimizing compiler toolkit helps developers take advantage of the functionality and scalability of the ColdFire microprocessor architecture for building a range of applications including mass storage devices, industrial automation, Internet and interactive multimedia devices, printers, set-top boxes and point-of-sale terminals.

The complexity of embedded applications requires particular features from a compiler. The Microtec toolkit provides more in-depth features than the traditional desktop environment including the ability to produce position-independent code and data, arbitrarily pack data structures and configure the run-time memory image, move data from ROM to RAM at boot time, debug production code and write sophisticated conditional assembler code for maximum configurability.

Instead of being confined to low-level assembly code, the Microtec compiler gives ColdFire processor developers the freedom to write code in the C/C++ language for such commands as reading, writing and reserving machine registers, interrupt procedures, and fetching and setting any hardware value like flags and stack pointer.

The new compiler support completes a full real-time operating system (RTOS) development suite from Accelerated Technology. This highly integrated package comprises the code|lab® embedded developer suite, the Microtec compilers, XRAY high-level debugger and the Nucleus® RTOS. The tight communication between these components provides everything that embedded developers need to complete their ColdFire microprocessor designs.

"We are very excited about the continued investment by Mentor Graphics in our ColdFire microprocessor product line. Mentor's comprehensive software solution enables ColdFire microprocessor customers to realize the maximum power and value offered by ColdFire products to meet customer's complex market demands," said Bill Krakar, Tools Program Manager 32-bit Embedded Controller Division, Motorola.

"The Microtec compiler integration from Accelerated Technology shows our continuing commitment to support the ColdFire family of processors. We believe that ColdFire microprocessor customers will benefit greatly from this solution," said Robert Day, director of marketing, Mentor Graphics Embedded Systems Division.
