Express Gives ThreadX Kernel Awareness for Analog Devices’ VisualDSP++
9/29/2003 - Express Logic, Inc., worldwide leader in royalty-free RTOS solutions, announced the immediate availability of ThreadX® Kernel Awareness for Analog Devices’ (ADI) VisualDSP++TM for the Blackfin Processor family. VisualDSP++ is an integrated software development and debug environment that enables efficient management of projects from start to finish from within a single interface. Express Logic’s ThreadX real-time operating system (RTOS) for ADI’s Blackfin® Processor—a device designed specifically to meet the computational demands and power constraints of today’s embedded audio, video and communications applications—boasts extremely small memory requirements, as little as 2K bytes, as well as very high performance. This makes the VisualDSP++ for the Blackfin Processor family running ThreadX well suited for applications in which high performance, low power, low cost and small form factor are essential.
“ThreadX for the ADI architecture is one of our most popular DSP products. This is largely due to our royalty-free licensing model and the inherent size and speed advantages of ThreadX. Having outstanding integration with development tools like ADI’s VisualDSP++ speeds the development cycle, another critical ingredient to our success,” says William E. Lamie, Express Logic’s president.
“Express Logic’s ThreadX suite for ADI’s VisualDSP++ eases the development process for applications with demanding size and performance requirements, including applications in digital imaging, networking and consumer electronics,” said Derek Leadbetter, Development Tools Product Line Director, Analog Devices, Inc.
The integration of VisualDSP++ and ThreadX Kernel Awareness offers Blackfin developers additional RTOS support by providing detailed views of all ThreadX resources. These resources include Threads, Semaphores, Mutexes, Queues, Timers, Event Flag Groups, Memory Block Pools and Memory Byte Pools. This greatly enhances developer productivity by eliminating the need for cumbersome searches for resource information at the point of source code interest. Instead, windows can be displayed that make the status of all ThreadX resources immediately available. The ThreadX RTOS is supported across ADI’s entire family of Blackfin Processors, which range from the low-cost ADSP-BF531 (at 300 MHz for $4.95) to the highest-performance ADSP-BF533 (at 600 MHz for $19.95). In addition, support for the µITRON API, a popular standard used in Japan, is now available on Blackfin Processors running ThreadX.
About ADI’s VisualDSP++
ADI’s VisualDSP++ is a powerful integrated development and debug environment (IDDE) that allows users to develop and manage complete embedded applications for a variety of ADI target processors in a convenient Windows interface. The VisualDSP++ IDDE includes: a C/C++ compiler, an assembler, a linker, a simulator, VisualDSP++ Kernel (VDK), an editor and a project manager. It also includes the VisualDSP++ debugger, which features advanced plotting tools for visual measurement of software performance, and statistical profiling capabilities that easily identify programming bottlenecks. The IDDE is designed as an open architecture, making it easy for partners such as Express Logic to take advantage of its advanced features. VisualDSP++ is part of ADI’s CROSSCORE family of DSP development tools, which also includes emulators and evaluation boards.
Pricing and Availability
The ThreadX integration plug-in for VisualDSP++ is provided as a Dynamic Link Library (DLL) that plugs seamlessly into the VisualDSP++ environment. It is available today from Express Logic —at no charge—for ThreadX developers. For more information on ADI’s VisualDSP++, please visit: www.analog.com/visualdsp.
