Pulse~LINK, Fujitsu to Develop World’s First Ultra Wideband Wireless LAN

9/26/2003 - Pulse~LINK, Inc. and Fujitsu Microelectronics America, Inc. (FMA) signed an agreement to jointly develop a digital baseband processor using Fujitsu’s 0.11-micron CMOS SoC ASIC solutions. This ASIC will be used in the Pulse~LINK system designed specifically for the world’s first Ultra Wideband Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN).

Pulse~LINK, a leading developer of Ultra Wideband (UWB) wireless and wired communication systems, is the first UWB company to demonstrate 400 Megabit Ultra Wideband transmissions and the only UWB company developing a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) compliant UWB system that provides 100-meter transmission ranges. The company has agreements to supply its UWB technology to customers for highly secure, high performance, next-generation WLAN applications.

Under the agreement, Fujitsu Microelectronics will provide design and manufacturing services for the digital baseband processor, one of two SoC ASICs that form Pulse~LINK’s high-speed secure WLAN solution.

The new ASIC will be developed using Fujitsu’s 0.11 micron CS91 standard cell process. It will incorporate a total of 1.25 million logic gates, along with a 200 MHz ARM9 core, Fujitsu’s low power SRAM cell library, and optional PCI 32/64-bit connectivity. It will operate at frequencies of 33 MHz and 66 MHz, with a core power supply of 1.2V and an I/O power of 3.3V. The 368-pin UWB ASIC will be housed in a Fujitsu FBGA package. Engineering samples are expected to be available by the end of calendar 2004.

Several aspects of the Pulse~LINK UWB WLAN technology make it ideal for the type of security applications which are driving the initial business for the company. A key feature of Pulse~LINK’s UWB wireless technology is its ability to transmit distances comparable to that of WiFi but with significantly greater data rates, which can be used for functions such as networking multiple video streams from fixed and mobile security cameras with mobile security personnel. Pulse~LINK’s UWB technology is also capable of providing highly precise position tracking for personnel and assets and enables a suite of fundamental new security features not available with current narrowband communications technologies. The ability for the UWB signal to peacefully coexist in the presence of multiple existing narrowband wireless technologies brings additional benefits. In addition to developing its proprietary WLAN technology, Pulse~LINK is an active voting member of the IEEE 802.15.3a Standards Group for sub-10 meter Wireless Personal Area Network (WPAN) applications.
