Modern Terminals Selects Fujitsu Hong Kong for SAN Infrastructure

9/25/2003 - Modern Terminals Limited, the longest-established container terminal operator in Hong Kong, is taking a new, organization-wide approach to deployment and management of its data storage resources. The Company has awarded the contract of implementing the storage area network (SAN) infrastructure to Fujitsu Hong Kong Limited, a leading provider of information technology and telecommunications solutions and services.

This new SAN infrastructure at Modern Terminals will help fulfill the company's storage requirements for various key projects and mission critical systems. Among the applications that will be supported by the new SAN Infrastructure include a mission-critical system that manages terminal operations, billing system that generates billing reports to customers, corporate email and file sharing systems.

The deployment of these applications will facilitate development of a networked storage framework that will improve data protection and service continuity capability for all Modern Terminals' IT systems. Specifically, the storage solutions will help the company to streamline nighttime operations including backup, reporting and data loading, improve data sharing as well as enhance resource utilization.

Currently, Modern Terminals handles an annual throughput volume of more than 4 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units). Upon completion of the new Container Terminal 9 (CT9) together with enhancements, the company will see an increase in its handling capacity up to 5.5 million TEUs per annum. The company provides services 24x7, all year round to major international shipping lines.

"With a company culture of achieving service excellence for customers, we always look for innovative ways to enhance our terminal operations. One of the areas in which we have been committing significant investments is the deployment of advanced IT equipment and systems. Modern Terminals is determined to maintain our reputation in the industry by providing high quality and flexible services to the benefits of our valued customers and business associates," said Mr Erik Bgh Christensen, Managing Director of Modern Terminals.

Industry analysts have been emphasizing the overall needs for organizations to develop a well designed and effective storage infrastructure. One of the analyst firms, IDC, forecasted early this year that the worldwide storage service market, including storage consulting, integration, management and support services, will grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.4% from 2002 to 2007.

"In the port infrastructure business where more and more services and applications are being integrated to support capacity growth, the deployment and management of storage resources are crucial to ensure such scalability," said Fujitsu (China) Co., Limited's President & CEO, China, Mr Bernard Kwok. "Storage has become a key element in the thrust for the next generation of e-Infrastructure. Fujitsu Hong Kong is proud to be a partner of Modern Terminals-a company at the forefront of deploying industry leading infrastructure solutions."

Fujitsu has been awarded the integration contract that will ensure Modern Terminals gets a 99.99 % uptime on system reliability, availability and serviceability - which is generally considered a very high standard of performance.

The storage solutions being used by Modern Terminals will be integrated and managed through Fujitsu Management Console. With a SAN environment in place, Modern Terminals will be able to remove existing performance and scalability barriers while supporting the existing and future IT technologies.

Under the agreement with Modern Terminals, Fujitsu will assist in the planning, hardware installation, configuration, testing and implementation of the SAN solution in the unique environment of the terminals. Fujitsu will also provide 7x24 support service to maintain a highly reliable and available SAN environment for uninterrupted terminal operations.
