TI Makes ADSL Wireless Home Networking Made Simple and Affordable

9/23/2003 - A new 802.11-enabled ADSL router platform that offers simple and affordable home networking was announced by Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE: TXN). The AR7W is a complete Wi-Fi® ADSL router design that supports the legacy ADSL, as well as the new ADSL2 and ADSL2+ standards, which enable consumers to achieve download speeds up to 24Mbps. With TI's 802.11g technology, AR7W-based CPEs allow consumers to take full advantage of the high-bandwidth broadband content and applications including video and gaming from anywhere in the home. The AR7W will be demonstrated at Computex Taipei, Sept 22-26 at the Taipei World Trade Center in the TI booth: Hall 3 (A21), booth # G045, 048, 147, 150.

The AR7W is a complete hardware and software design that combines TI's leading ADSL router-on-a-chip, the AR7, with its TNETW1130 802.11b/g solution. The AR7W improves performance of ADSL routers with two unique enhancements developed by TI - TurboDSL packet acceleratorTM technology and dynamic adaptive equalization (DAE). The AR7W decreases the bill of materials for a complete router, and provides the best performance to deliver broadband content to and throughout the home.

With multiple users and devices on a single home network, downstream performance can be impacted causing download delays and jitter in audio and video stream. TI's TurboDSL packet accelerator improves the downstream performance by providing 300 percent faster packet acknowledgement over current ADSL router solutions. This enables every user on a home network to experience continuous high-speed connectivity whether there are one or multiple users online at the same time. It also provides smooth transmission of streaming video and increases response time for speed-sensitive applications such as interactive gaming.

TI's AR7W includes a unique function, dynamic adaptive equalization, which enables easier self-installs for consumers and increases operators' service area. DAE allows carriers to increase their revenues by expanding their service coverage area including areas where DSL was previously unavailable. Furthermore, DAE can enable easy router self-installs to copper access lines that contain bridge taps which previously required one or more truck-rolls for a consumer to get ADSL service in their home.

TI's TNETW1130 802.11g solution draws on TI's history in providing high performance 802.11 operation and superior mixed-mode performance with its 802.11b+ products. The AR7W has robust interoperability in any 802.11g, 802.11b or 802.11b+ network. This enables consumers to mix 802.11b and 802.11g devices from different manufacturers in their home network without performance concerns.

Early customer designs using the AR7W are already underway with general availability expected in 4Q 2003.
