9/23/2003 - Vapps, Inc. chose Internet Protocol (IP) platforms from NMS Communications (Nasdaq: NMSS), trusted supplier of communications products and services, to create the first IP audio conferencing bridge for service providers and large enterprises. Using IP-based technologies for enhanced services like conference calling drives down the cost of these services significantly. When coupled with IP transit and termination, service providers now have a more flexible and less expensive way to deliver enhanced services to their customers.
The Vapps Conferencing Bridge 1000 is a modular software and hardware solution that provides reliable and continuously provisioned conference calls using Voice over IP (VoIP) technologies. The product uses industry standards like SIP and Linux and off-the-shelf hardware like Intel processors and NMS Alliance Generation® and Convergence GenerationTM platforms to achieve high reliability, availability, scalability, and superior voice quality.
"IP-based technologies reduce the cost of adding marginal capacity and reduce the total cost of ownership as service providers and enterprise customers are no longer locked into proprietary, vertically integrated solutions for conferencing. This is important as continued pricing pressure drives down margins in the enhanced services market segments," said Vapps CEO Ben Lilienthal. "Furthermore, the NMS platform provides the market-tested reliability that our customers require."
TIA forecasts the growth of video and audio conferencing to grow at double-digit rates, rising from a combined $3.3 billion in 2002 to $7.2 billion in 2006. Meanwhile, IDC predicts 2004 as the "breakout year" for IP.
NMS' Convergence Generation 6000 is a low-latency, IP media-streaming platform that supports multiple applications and networks and preserves voice and audio quality. Vapps also uses NMS' Alliance Generation 4000 that employs NMS' Digital Signal Processing (DSP) architecture, which delivers an open development environment, built-in scalability, and increased processing power.
