Cypress Ships Open Source USB Development Kit with Red Hat GNUPro

9/18/2003 - Cypress Semiconductor Corporation (NYSE: CY), the market share leader in USB, announced that it has begun shipping a new development kit for its EZ-HostTM and EZ-OTGTM embedded host controllers, including Red Hat GNUPro open-source development tools. Red Hat is the world’s leading open source and Linux provider.

"Red Hat took an open source development environment and modified it to work with our flagship USB embedded host and OTG devices," said Brian Booker, product manager of Cypress Semiconductor’s USB host and OTG products. "These industry-standard tools enable developers to create a wide array of unique applications that will allow consumer electronic and other USB devices to communicate directly with one another."

"Red Hat Engineering Services provided the compiler port and debugging technology for Cypress’s EZ-Host and EZ-OTG embedded host controllers," said James Prasad, general manager of Global Engineering Services at Red Hat. "Customers using the Cypress family of devices can purchase support and additional engineering services from Red Hat to customize solutions for their target market."

Featuring 16-Bit RISC controllers, large memory and low power, Cypress’s EZ-Host and EZ-OTG embedded controllers operate as either hosts or peripherals, depending on the application. EZ-Host (CY7C67300) is a multi-port controller featuring two individually configurable two-port serial interface engines (SIEs) and a configurable I/O block that can connect to numerous standard interfaces. The product is targeted at tethered applications, ranging from DVD players, set-top boxes, Internet appliances and print servers. EZ-OTG (CY7C67200), based on the USB On-The-Go (OTG) protocol, enables direct connectivity between portable devices, such as cell phones, PDAs, video and still cameras, MP3 players and mass storage peripherals. The product features two single-port SIEs and a power-boost circuit that operates as low as 2.7 volts.
