9/17/2003 - Motorola Computer Group, a part of Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT), introduced the industry's fastest Processor PMC module, the PrPMC880, which features an MPC7447 PowerPC processor built with AltiVecTM technology that enables speeds of up to 1.3 GHz. The PrPMC880 enables original equipment manufacturers to speed the deployment of higher performance applications while lowering their total cost of ownership, Motorola's strategy across its entire product line. AltiVec technology allows designers to leverage existing PowerPC code and add AltiVec performance as market and customers' requirements change.
Early design wins for the PrPMC880 range from high-end wafer steppers—machines involved in manufacturing semiconductors—to third-generation wireless base stations. The equipment manufacturers building these applications chose the PrPMC880 because traditional commercially available mezzanine cards do not fit the size and power requirements of their applications. In addition, the PrPMC880 provides even greater processing performance to complement the applications specific I/O they've developed internally.
"OEMs prefer these small Processor PMC compute engines for a variety of reasons, but three key characteristics are often mentioned: size, speed and flexibility," said Jerry Gipper, director of marketing, Motorola Computer Group. "The small size of PrPMCs allow them to fit into multiple places within embedded equipment—almost anywhere that requires computation or control, from missile guidance to printers. With the PrPMC880, OEMs now have an even faster stepping-stone for their embedded architectures. It just keeps getting easier and easier to upgrade application performance."
The PrPMC880 is compatible with the recently ratified VITA 32 standard, which creates a new class of microprocessor based PMCs and retains electrical signaling compatibility with existing PMC cards. This new Processor PMC standard simplifies and speeds the development of custom PCI designs in industries such as semiconductor equipment, storage, printing, medial imaging and telecommunications.
The PrPMC880 will be available in November and provides 1Gbit Ethernet connectivity and up to 1GB of DDR DRAM in a standard single-width PMC form factor.
About the Processor PMC Family
Motorola's extensive family of Processor PMC modules feature a complete host microprocessor and memory subsystem on a VITA 32 standard compact form factor. A PrPMC design approach allows customers to design simpler and smaller baseboards and focus their resources on adding value to their products through innovation such as software or custom interfaces. Motorola's PrPMC products can help shorten the design cycle, speed time-to-market and reduce the time and complexity of upgrading, which lowers the total cost of ownership and provides excellent scalability.
