Applied Data Unveils Lowest Cost, XScale-based Handheld Embedded Engine

9/15/2003 - Applied Data Systems (ADS), a leading developer of RISC-based application-ready systems, introduced their newest, smallest and lowest power consuming product addition to their XScale-based family at the Embedded Systems Conference in Boston. The SMX is a single board computer engine, readily deployed in such industries as POS and telematics, with provisions for battery operation, wireless 802.11b, bar code scanning, and Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS).

"Its compact, low cost design make the SMX perfect for the handheld market, especially POS and fleet cab applications," said Fred Salloum, Director of Marketing for ADS. "Its variable device capabilities, and flexibility to couple with additional technologies make it one of the most versatile products in our line."

The SMX is driven by Intel's PXA255 400 MHz processor, renowned for its scalable speed capabilities. The PXA255 adds to ADS' own power partitioning technologies to ensure the lowest power consumption available on any ADS product. The SMX supports a wide variety of interfaces, including a compact flash slot for devices such as 802.11b and Ethernet, with three serial ports for bar code scanning and EAS, and sub <1W power consumption. It presently interfaces to a low cost, low power Samsung display. The SMX is compact at approximately 2"x3", and comes off the shelf with Windows CE.NET (Linux options are under development) and is a perfect fit for any handheld product.

While the SMX is small and consumes a minimum amount of power, it is powerful with 400MHz processing and rich graphics capabilities. Reconfigured products readily provide for up to XGA graphics (1280x1024), with 16 bit color on SVGA LCD's. Please contact ADS for reconfigured delivery schedules at 301-490-4007.
