Lantronix Makes Network Connection with Zucchetti's Access Control

9/12/2003 - Lantronix®, Inc. (Nasdaq: LTRX) announced that its award-winning XPortTM embedded device server has been selected by Zucchetti Group, a leading systems integrator and software solutions provider based in Italy. XPort will provide network connectivity for Zucchetti’s current leading-edge access control, clock and presence terminal products for the home, office and public facilities. In addition, XPort’s integrated feature set, low cost and small size will open new business opportunities for Zucchetti, which plans to incorporate XPort into its smaller terminals and access control products.

According to Paolo Del Frate, chief development engineer at Zucchetti, the other significant deciding factor for XPort was the ease with which it was incorporated into various product designs. The company’s design engineers were able to “drop in” XPort onto a simple circuit board after approximately 15 days of design, thereby dramatically reducing the product’s time to market.

“Zucchetti’s success perfectly illustrates our overall objective with XPort, namely, to enable manufacturers to reduce the engineering risk and cost associated with adding networking capabilities to their products,” said Geoffrey Boyce, executive vice president of marketing at Lantronix. “We have seen a tremendous response to XPort among manufacturers due to how easily it integrates into a product design to quickly add network connectivity.”

XPort is a self contained network-enabling solution enclosed within a ruggedized RJ-45 package, which can be embedded in virtually any electronic device. Devices incorporating XPort gain their own address on the World Wide Web and can be accessed from any Web browser, including on a PC or cell phone, from anywhere in the world. XPort can serve up Internet-standard XML pages, independently issue e-mails for notifications or alerts and run other applications as defined by the device manufacturer.

XPort enables device manufacturers to quickly and cost-effectively add network connectivity to their products by providing a complete, integrated solution that includes a 10Base–T / 100Base–TX Ethernet connection, a reliable and proven operating system, an embedded Web server, flexible firmware, a full TCP/IP protocol stack, and optional 256-bit standards-based (AES) encryption. Everything designers need to add network connectivity is incorporated into XPort’s compact design.

“With its small size and complete feature set, XPort has opened a wide range of new business opportunities for Zucchetti’s products as well as eliminated the costs associated with developing our own fully integrated networking solution,” said Alberto Pavesi, CEO of Zucchetti’s Time and Attendance and Access Control Division. “With XPort, we can concentrate on developing our own products and increasing our bottom line, rather than spending many months to become an expert on Ethernet and write an IP stack. XPort greatly simplifies the process of adding network connectivity to our access control products.”
