9/11/2003 - Fastrax Ltd., a developer of GPS receivers with industry-leading performance and feature set, expands its product offering with new-generation iTrax03 series OEM GPS receivers. Designed to complement the Fastrax iTrax02 series OEM GPS receivers, the iTrax03 product family introduces several innovations to allow extensive applicability.
The iTrax03 receivers provide a complete embedded application platform for position-aware solutions. They are ideally suited for industrial tracking and navigation systems such as asset tracking and vehicle navigation devices; and small battery-operated appliances such as sports accessories, handheld computers and mobile phones.
“Our aim is to make the addition of position-aware features as easy as possible. We are confident that the number and variety of GPS-enabled devices will explode within the next few years, both in industrial and leisure use”, said Kim Kaisti, VP Business Development, Fastrax Ltd. “With the market-leading performance, versatile programmability and record low power consumption of the iTrax03, more and more position-aware applications become possible to manufacture with reasonable costs.”
Offering 8 or 16 MBits of embedded Flash memory, the iTrax03 receivers enable the implementation of positioning features into a wide range of applications. Versatile programmability allows the use of the iTrax03/16 as the host CPU, reducing the number of components needed, and decreasing application size, weight, power drain and total costs. In addition, the iTrax03 receivers are surface mount design (SMD) macro components. SMD allows cost effective volume manufacturing and eliminates the need for costly system and RF connectors.
The highly sensitive Fastrax iTrax03 12-channel OEM GPS receivers feature several enhancements for improved performance. Kalman navigation increases accuracy in in-car navigation systems, and support for A-GPS (Assisted GPS) enhances performance in demanding environments. A dedicated hardware search engine ensures fast TTFF (Time To First Fix) in all conditions.
The iTrax03 form factor is 23 x 23 x 2,7 mm and weight only 3 grams. Small size combined with a power consumption level of 95mW at 2,7V in continuous tracking mode makes the Fastrax iTrax03 receivers an ideal fit for small handheld devices. Added with user configurable power management, the iTrax03 receivers enable an extremely long operating time, a key feature in battery-operated devices.
The iTrax03/16 receivers with 16 MBits Flash memory can be tailored to fit various needs using Fastrax iSuite03 SDK (Software Development Kit), an environment for application specific customization and programming. Changes to operation parameters can be made using either standard NMEA0183 or Fastrax proprietary iTalk protocols. The receivers offer extensive support for external sensors and versatile interface ports. In case customization is not required, all that is required to make the iTrax03 receivers operational is the addition of an antenna and a power supply.
ITrax03 standard features include a data logger with a capacity for up to 70.000 data points to enable e.g. detailed route tracking in fleet management. Navigation data is automatically stored in the embedded Flash memory, enabling short start-up time and replacing the need for a separate back-up battery.
Fastrax also offers professional Engineering Services. The services include consultation and application specific customization of software as well as RF and electronics design.
Fastrax GPS receivers are globally available via a network of qualified distributors. The iTrax03 series receivers are available immediately as samples and scheduled to ship in volumes in Q1, 2004. More information on distributors is available at http://www.fastrax.fi/distrib/kartta.html.
Fastrax develops industry-leading products for optimal utilization of GNSS location services (Global Navigation Satellite Systems). The most well known of these services is GPS (Global Positioning System). Fastrax transforms GPS technologies into highly scalable solutions with open interfaces, combined with ultra low power consumption and miniature hardware design. With industry-leading performance, Fastrax GPS receivers navigate continuously even in extreme conditions. Receivers are ideally suited in both industrial location applications and high-volume consumer products such as cell phones and sports accessories. Headquartered in Finland and founded in 1999, the company is privately owned and backed by leading venture capital investors CapMan, Eqvitec, Startupfactory and Innocap, with a strategic investment by Suunto Corporation, a subsidiary of Amer Group, a leading global supplier of sporting goods equipment. Global Positioning System (GPS) is a worldwide satellite navigation infrastructure funded and controlled by the U.S. Department of Defense, originally developed for U.S. military purposes. GPS provides satellite signals that enable GPS receivers to calculate their exact position and velocity. The GPS infrastructure has three segments. The space segment consists of 24 satellites that orbit the earth in 12 hours. The control segment consists of tracking stations located around the world, with the master control station located at Falcon Air Force Base in Colorado. The user segment consists of GPS receivers and users utilizing the information provided by the system. GPS is widely used in e.g. marine navigation.
