9/11/2003 - CyberHome has selected Cirrus Logic Inc.'s (Nasdaq: CRUS) DVD recorder reference design, which integrates Cirrus' flagship CS98200 DVD processor, the CS92288 MPEG CODEC, the CS5333 analog-to-digital (A/D) converter and the CS4334 two-channel digital-to-analog (D/A) converter, for CyberHome’s new line of sub-$400 DVD recorders, the CH-DVR-1500 model. The CH-DVR 1500 will be available through television shopping networks and retail stores across the United States beginning this month.
Cirrus' DVD recorder reference platform, based on its flagship CS98200 DVD processor and CS92288 audio/video (A/V) CODEC and mixed-signal converters, offered CyberHome a comprehensive solution that delivers the hardware, software and manufacturing tool kit necessary to help CyberHome quickly establish the CH-DVR 1500 in the market. The CH-DVR 1500 is expected to provide consumers with high-quality A/V record and playback for long-term storage and playback on the installed base of DVD players worldwide. DVD recorders play standard DVD discs and also allow consumers to record video content – such as broadcast television or home movies – onto DVD disc media.
"The DVD recorder market is going to be the biggest growing segment in our market for 2004, and Cirrus Logic has been one of our key strategic partners for the past few years," said Tin Wu, president, CyberHome.
Cirrus' CS98200 DVD processor is the industry's highest performing DVD processor, supporting such capabilities as progressive scan DVD video. Cirrus' CS92288 encoding solution provides high-quality video recording over a wide range of bit rates while retaining compatibility with the installed base of DVD players. In addition, the CyberHome DVD recorders leverage Cirrus' leading audio solutions by incorporating the CS5333 A/D converter and the CS4334 two-channel D/A converter.
"Cirrus Logic is at the forefront of rapidly emerging, high-growth product segments such as DVD recording, accelerating mass-market adoption by offering our customers ready-made solutions that will allow them to establish their products in the market quickly and at the right price," said David French, president and chief executive officer, Cirrus Logic. "We're pleased to have been selected by CyberHome as the basis for their new line of DVD recorders. With their impressive line-up of volume retail distributors, we believe their CH-DVR 1500 DVD recorder will be a real favorite with consumers."
DVD recorders are expected to become the fastest growing segment in digital entertainment during the next several years, with expected unit sales of up to 32 million by 2006 (source: IDC, October 2002). These devices will allow consumers to upgrade more than 30 years of VCR technology and begin to store and view content in the digital domain. Cirrus' reference platform is designed to help customers such as CyberHome drive volume production of more affordable DVD recording products.
