9/4/2003 - TimeSys(R) Corporation, a leader in embedded Linux(R) and development tools, and Motorola Computer Group (NYSE:MOT), announced a partnership to deliver TimeSys Linux RTOS software development kits for the MVME5500, Motorola's highest performance VMEbus single board computer. The TimeSys Linux RTOS SDK for the MVME5500 provides Motorola customers with a ready to run development environment featuring the industry's only single-kernel Linux RTOS, providing true real-time performance under heavy loads in a Linux-based solution. The tight integration of TimeSys Linux RTOS, TimeSys' cross-platform software development tools, and Motorola's MVME5500 reduces the cost and risk of developing motion control, simulators, command and control, radar, guidance systems and sonar applications.
"Our relationship with Motorola provides MVME5500 customers with a true real-time Linux solution capable of the performance levels offered by traditional proprietary RTOSs, with all the benefits of the Linux operating system," said TimeSys CEO Larry Weidman. "Embedded engineers that want to use Linux but are concerned with the performance limitations of other embedded Linux solutions can have confidence that TimeSys Linux will perform as well as any traditional proprietary RTOS. Further, TimeSys' royalty-free, per-developer-seat licensing and tightly integrated professional GUI development tools will reduce costs, development risks, and time to market."
"Motorola is working with TimeSys to produce a Linux RTOS software development kit for our highest performance VMEbus computer board because TimeSys Linux has the performance capabilities and hardware-support focus that brings out the best of both products," said Jerry Gipper, Director of Marketing, Motorola Computer Group. "Motorola's VME customers now have a royalty-free, ready to run Linux solution that provides completely predictable, real-time response under any load."
The TimeSys Linux RTOS SDK for the MVME5500 single board computer will be available from TimeSys in October, and will be available for online purchase at www.timesys.com/buy/motorola.
The MVME5500 series is designed to meet the needs of OEMs including those in defense and aerospace, industrial automation and medical imaging market segments. Customers looking for a "technology refresh" for their application while maintaining backward compatibility with their existing VMEbus infrastructure can upgrade to the MVME5500 series and take advantage of the enhanced performance features.
TimeSys Linux RTOS
TimeSys Linux RTOS is a hardware-specific, royalty-free Linux real-time operating system and software development environment for embedded applications. At its base is TimeSys Linux GPL, the industry's lowest latency open source Linux kernel offering full kernel preemption, unlimited process priorities, enhanced schedulers, and high availability/carrier-grade features. TimeSys Linux RTOS is the only complete Linux distribution to add unique priority inversion avoidance mechanisms and high resolution timers to meet the performance requirements of the most demanding real-time systems. Packaged with enhanced and certified device drivers that support all I/O peripherals to the edge of the board, cross-platform GNU tool chains, a root file system and full documentation, TimeSys Linux RTOS is delivered ready-to-run on Motorola's MVME5500 SBC, as well as more than 70 other unique embedded platforms spanning 8 processor architectures and 35 processors. Additionally, TimeSys Linux Reservations technologies ensure system response and predictable performance under extreme loads and overload conditions by reserving CPU cycles and network packet resources for critical tasks. Engineers can improve their development experience through the use of TimeSys' Windows- and Linux-hosted integrated development environment and event tracing/debugging tools, TimeStorm and TimeTrace. Packaged in a complete, royalty-free product, TimeSys Linux RTOS helps reduce total cost of ownership, development risk, and time-to-market of advanced embedded systems.
