9/3/2003 - Cypress Semiconductor Corporation (NYSE: CY), the market share leader in USB, announced it has become the first silicon vendor to achieve USB On-The-Go (OTG) compliance certification from the USB Implementers’ Forum (USB-IF) for a microprocessor-based embedded USB OTG controller. Cypress’s EZ-OTGTM (CY7C67200) controller allows portable electronic devices to communicate with one another without connecting to a PC. The EZ-HostTM (CY7C67300) device brings similar capabilities to multi-port devices like set top boxes, point-of-sale terminals and printer servers.
Cypress’s EZ-OTG and EZ-Host products recently completed a battery of interoperability tests at an industry compliance workshop sponsored by the USB-IF in late July. With the On-The-Go compliance program only recently put in place by the USB-IF, this was the first "Plugfest" that tested OTG devices for certification.
"We designed our OTG products with broad applications in mind," said Brian Booker, product manager for Cypress’ USB host products. "We’ve architected a family of products that can play wherever USB plays in portable devices, leveraging a USB adoption rate among manufacturers that remains strong and continues to intensify. We believe interoperability will be critical to market acceptance in the OTG space, where many different devices can potentially communicate with one another as host or peripheral devices. This accomplishment speaks to our market leadership and the many hours of testing that we put into designing a world-class product."
Featuring a 16-Bit RISC controller, large memory and low power, both EZ-OTG and EZ-Host can operate as either a host or peripheral device, depending on the application. The devices contain 16 kbytes of RAM, multiple CPU interfaces, and on-board BIOS to handle a portion of the USB processing. The embedded processor eliminates the need for an external CPU in many applications. Based on the USB On-The-Go protocol, EZ-OTG enables direct connectivity between portable devices, such as cell phones, PDAs, video and still cameras, MP3 players and mass storage peripherals. The product features two single-port dual-role serial interface engines (SIEs) and a power-boost circuit that operates as low as 2.7 volts. EZ-Host, also supporting the OTG protocol, enables embedded host functionality in multiport devices such as set top boxes, point-of-sale terminals, printer servers, wireless access points, and automotive consoles. This product features two dual-role SIEs with a total of four USB ports, and a memory expansion bus for added code or data buffering. Both devices leverage Cypress’s industry-leading SRAM technology to provide added functionality while remaining cost-competitive with other solutions in the market.
About the USB Implementers Forum
