Agilent Targets Plasma Display Panels with Gate Drive Optocoupler

8/13/2003 - Agilent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: A) announced a new 2 Amp, high-speed gate drive optocoupler ideally suited for IGBTs (insulated gate bipolar transistors) and Power MOSFETs (metal oxide field effect transistors). The Agilent HCPL-3180 can be used in the drive circuitry of plasma display panels, and in high-performance switch mode power supply (SMPS), uninterruptible power supply (UPS), motor control and distributed power architecture applications.

In recent years, digital signal processor and microcontroller usage in motor control, UPS and high performance SMPS applications have experienced strong growth, requiring a new class of gate drive to meet the additional complexity and performance requirements placed upon the associated electronic components.

"The HCPL-3180 sets the performance benchmark for gate driver optocouplers," said Tze Siong Chong, vice president and general manager of Agilent's Isolation Products Division. "Our optocoupler's fast switching speed, short propagation delay, and high drive capability helps manufacturers meet the electrical isolation and performance requirements for a wide range of new consumer and industrial products."

The Agilent HCPL-3180 combines maximum switching speed of 250 kHz with 2 Amp output current, which is ideal for high-performance applications that require high-output current and fast switching speed. Other key features of the HCPL-3180 include a short propagation delay of 200 ns maximum, high common mode rejection of 10 kV/microseconds, and guaranteed performance over the -40 C to +100 C operating temperature range. The new gate drive optocoupler operates over a supply voltage from 10 V to 20 V.

The HCPL-3180 is easy to design with and outperforms high-voltage integrated circuits by providing true optical isolation, higher noise immunity, and better performance stability over temperature.

To assure electrical safety, the HCPL-3180 optocoupler is recognized under UL (2500 V RMS for 1 min. per UL 1577), CSA Component Acceptance Notice no. 5, TUV and DIN EN 60747-5-2 with approval for option (option 600).

U.S. Pricing and Availability
The Agilent HCPL-3180 is available in a conventional 8-pin dual-inline package, or with a gull-wing surface-mount option. It is priced at $1.56 in 10,000 - 24,999 piece quantities and is immediately available through Agilent's direct sales channel, and through Agilent's worldwide distribution partners.
