8/12/2003 - When Actaris, a worldwide leader in utility metering products, begins installing 150,000 remotely readable electricity meters in Europe this fall, Cirrus Logic Inc. (Nasdaq: CRUS) analog technology will be on board.
Actaris has announced it will use the Cirrus® CS5451 energy management chip in its three-phase power meter, intended for use throughout Europe. One of the largest electricity generators in Northern Europe last month contracted with Actaris to supply remotely readable electricity meters, as part of an extensive program to supply all the company's customers with remotely readable electricity meters by 2009. The company's goal is to provide monthly metering and easy-to-understand electricity bills, while eliminating pre-debiting.
The Actaris system includes meters integrating RF (radio frequency) or PLC (power line carrier) communications, communications infrastructure and data collection engine.
"The diverse geographical conditions of our European markets require technology that can guarantee reliable data readings in high-density areas as well as in sparsely populated regions," said Rene Gourc, Actaris project leader. "In addition, our metering systems must ensure a high level of security to control theft of electricity. Cirrus has the proven, state-of-the-art performance and the quality we need to meet those demands." The meters utilize the CS5451, a six-channel analog-to-digital converter (ADC), specifically designed for international energy markets, where three-phase power is widely used.
Cirrus' energy-to-digital converters can detect power surges and other irregular power fluctuations before breakdowns occur and communicate via a built-in serial interface to alert and dispatch repair technicians. "The Cirrus power management products are designed for extremely accurate energy management and preventive maintenance," said Jason Rhode, director of Analog Products Marketing, Cirrus Logic. "By providing the exact functions the customer needs, these products offer cost-effective, highly optimized solutions to meet any energy measurement requirement."
