8/6/2003 - Lantronix®, Inc. (Nasdaq: LTRX), announced that the company was selected to The FocalPoint 40TM, a list of forty innovative North American companies that shape and promote machine-to-machine (M2M) communications. The list, newly created in 2003 by the industry-analyst firm The FocalPoint Group, recognizes those companies that champion device enablement and connectivity, whereby everyday products and devices (e.g., home appliances, vehicles, equipment and buildings) are being placed on networks in order to share information, offer new types of “smart services” and conduct commerce.
To be selected as a FocalPoint 40 company, Lantronix met the following three criteria: develops and deploys technologies and/or services that heighten interaction between machines, environments and end users; provides ongoing innovation and support to M2M technologies and to the arena; and demonstrates proven success with customer implementations. According to Ian Barkin, principal of The FocalPoint Group, Lantronix fulfills these criteria through building integrated solutions, including hardware and software, that enable manufacturers to easily connect almost anything to a network.
“Lantronix has been a trailblazer in device connectivity since the late 1980s when the company started, and we are proud to be included among a list of champions for device enablement such as the FocalPoint 40,” said Geoffrey Boyce, executive vice president of marketing at Lantronix. “We see a tremendous opportunity in machine-to-machine communications, as machines and devices overtake the number of people who are using the Internet to share information and companies realize the business opportunities for offering information-based ‘smart services.’”
Lantronix’ products and solutions accelerate and optimize an existing network or enable the deployment of a next-generation network of smart devices. “Smart devices with embedded network intelligence can deliver more than simple connectivity,” said Boyce. “Lantronix’ products are designed to run applications such as remote diagnostics and upgrades that increase device intelligence, thus increasing the end product’s value.” Smart devices that incorporate Lantronix’ device-management technology can be connected to a network or the Internet for greater management capabilities.
“Our goal with establishing the FocalPoint 40 is to highlight the true innovators that are making machine-to-machine communications happen,” said Barkin. “With more than two million devices now online because of Lantronix, the company is positioned to help network a substantial range of device types, particularly in office, retail, industrial and medical settings.”
According to Barkin, the FocalPoint 40 group of companies has, for the most part, seen a promising increase in activity over the last six months, and many feel very confident that the time for widespread adoption of M2M communications is right around the corner. FocalPoint’s survey of the market innovators shows a 40% growth rate in device deployment over the next 18 months, with more than 60% of these innovators anticipating more than a 50% growth in revenues in the next six months. “Clearly, M2M is gaining momentum, and the companies that we selected will be on the ground floor for the incredible opportunity that M2M growth represents,” added Barkin.
Another consideration in the FocalPoint 40 selection was that fact that Lantronix’ products support open industry standards including the Fieldbus Foundation, Industrial Ethernet Association, Industrial Automation Open Networking Alliance and the Universal Plug and Play Forum.
