Trolltech Rolls Out Customizability in Qtopia 1.7

8/6/2003 - Trolltech announced the release of Qtopia 1.7. With this release, Qtopia offers new levels of speed performance and customizability – an unrivalled Linux alternative for mobile embedded devices.

"With the performance enhancements of Qtopia 1.7, Trolltech is spearheading the development of a viable alternative in the market for mobile handheld devices," says Trolltech CEO and co-founder Haavard Nord. "Qtopia is faster and more flexible than ever before – a big win for device manufacturers, as well as the end user."

New features in Qtopia 1.7 include:

  • Application quick launch: Qtopia 1.7 has significantly improved application launch time. Applications can be compiled to allow Quicklaunching, which reduces start-up time considerably by pre-loading and initializing core functionality.
  • The increased launch performance in Qtopia 1.7 significantly improves the experience for the user. At the same time, it increases the range of embedded hardware on which Qtopia can be deployed – optimizing Qtopia for lower end as well as high-end devices.
  • Server split: Qtopia now has a better divide between GUI and non-GUI parts of the source code, providing manufacturers the option of either using the full Qtopia application suite or using the high-level Qtopia API to create customized launcher interfaces.
  • Improved external memory handling: With Qtopia 1.7, external memory card reading has also been enhanced. Document loading and scanning of removable media, such as CF and SD cards, has been improved – also translating into a faster and better end user experience.
  • Availability: Qtopia 1.7 free edition and Qtopia Desktop for Microsoft Windows and Linux are available for immediate download from the Trolltech website. Qtopia 1.7 commercial edition is immediately available. Contact sales@trolltech.com for details.
