Cirrus MPEG A/V CODEC Powers Instant Digital Video Recording Devices

8/6/2003 - ADS Technologies, a leader in consumer video editing solutions, selected Cirrus Logic Inc.'s (Nasdaq: CRUS) award-winning USB-DVR 2.0 reference design for the latest release of its Instant DVD line of consumer digital video recording products. The new product line began shipping to U.S. retailers this month after recently being awarded PC Magazine’s Editor’s Choice Award.

The new ADS devices – Instant DVD 2.0 and USB Instant DVD+DV – feature improved performance over previous versions of ADS’ recorder products by combining the increased bandwidth of USB 2.0 with the high video quality and audio/video (A/V) synchronization provided by Cirrus Logic’s CS92288 MPEG A/V CODEC.

The Cirrus USB-DVR 2.0 reference design is a USB-based PC peripheral that makes it easy for manufacturers to bring to market compelling new DVD recording products more rapidly and at mass market price points. "By incorporating Cirrus' streamlined chipset design, we have been able to reduce the number of hardware components, which in turn reduces system and software complexity," said Mike McCoy, ADS president. "The end result is an affordable product that puts users at the forefront of video editing."

Using ADS' Instant DVD 2.0, users can easily import videos from any analog source such as VHS tapes, camcorders, DVD players, laser discs or televisions and then transfer them to a computer. The captured video can be edited on the PC, then authored and burned to a CD or DVD recordable disc for playback on most PCs and set-top DVD players. The USB Instant DVD+DV lets users capture from any analog or digital video source, including capturing directly from a digital camcorder via the DV port. The design also supports a cost-effective DV daughter board that enables digital camcorders to be directly attached to a PC using a high-quality digital connection for data transfer and camcorder control.

The Instant DVD products also feature the Cirrus CS4223 analog audio CODEC and the Cirrus CS4954 digital video encoder.

"Cirrus and ADS have a long relationship of building consumer products that deliver high audio/video performance at an affordable cost," said Mark Farley, director, PC Video Products Cirrus Logic. "We are excited to enable ADS to bring to market this award-winning product that makes possible for consumers to import and record analog content in a digital format and a lifetime storage of this content on non-degradeable optical media."

ADS' InstantDVD2.0 and Instant DVD+DV, retailing at $179 and $269, respectively, are available now through Circuit City, Fry's, Costco Canada and other major retailers, and e-tailers including
