Applied Data Showcases Embedded Linux Scalability at LinuxWorld

8/6/2003 - Applied Data Systems (ADS), a leading developer of RISC-based application-ready systems, will be demonstrating their family of products and their range of scalability at the LinuxWorld Conference this week.

"Scalability with Open Source software insures our customers can find the right software to meet their needs." says Fred Salloum, Director of Marketing. ADS demonstrates GNU/Linux running on the Intel® XScaleTM ARM RISC processor. XScale processors include both voltage and clock scaling for superior energy efficiency. Software root file system scalability ranges include:

  • Tiny ramdisk based root file system. The ramdisk root file system is stored in compressed non-volatile on-board flash partition that guarantees consistent reboots. The compressed ramdisk often consumes less than 3Mbytes of flash memory and less than 8Mybtes of DRAM. Ramdisk can be combined with CRAMFS, JFFS2 and other flash based file systems to build full featured robust GNU/Linux systems.
  • Medium sized JFFS2 file systems resident in on board flash. JFFS2 file systems are compressed, load leveling, journaling file systems. JFFS2 file systems are volatile over reboot allowing the flexibility to easily make incremental changes as necessary after systems are deployed. Prebuilt JFFS2 root files systems are available from handhelds.org.
  • Full sized GNU/Linux systems based on Debian systems resident on Hitachi MicrodrivesTM which scale up to 4Gbytes. Debian ARM distribution enables the full set of GNU/Linux features familiar to the users of GNU/Linux workstations and servers. Debian includes native compilers and development tools which can speed software development by eliminating the need for cross-compilers and other cross platform development tools. Debian is renown for its robust and secure GNU/Linux distributions.

With this GNU/Linux offering, ADS provides the embedded community additional solutions, faster time to market, and some of the most versatile, ruggedized and low power systems on the market.
