Cirrus Logic Provides Power for Measuring Electric Energy Usage

8/29/2003 - With the introduction of two new integrated analog-to-digital (A/D) chips by Cirrus Logic Inc. (Nasdaq: CRUS), digital power-meter manufacturers will be able to implement more accurate, cost-effective solutions for measuring residential and industrial power usage.

The new Cirrus CS5462 is targeted toward the residential single-phase power-meter market. The CS5462 offers improved temperature stability and accuracy, forming a superior choice for designers of electronic-meter systems, which are devices that provide extensive information on customer energy usage. The CS5462 also incorporates a patented calibration technique that eliminates the need for the external potentiometers or memory.

For residential single-phase or industrial three-phase systems, Cirrus has introduced the CS5461, the successor to its popular CS5460A. This A/D converter provides the additional functionality of a temperature sensor and a lower temperature coefficient, leading to improved temperature stability. The device features a serial interface for communication with a microcontroller and is initialized and fully functional upon reset. It also includes an on-chip voltage reference.

"Globally, there is a shift away from mechanical power meters and toward electronic meters because these systems offer lower cost, greater reliability and improved power monitoring features to manufacturers of both residential and industrial meters," said Jason Rhode, director of Analog Products Marketing, Cirrus Logic. "Our new products, the CS5461 and CS5462, give these new power-meter systems a more cost-effective solution than what’s available on the market today, while also providing more data and improved accuracy."

Pricing and Availability
The CS5461 is available in 24-pin SSOP and is priced at $1.51 in quantities of 100,000. The CS5462, also available in a 24-pin SSOP, is priced at $1.24 in quantities of 100,000.
