8/29/2003 - European consumer electronics giant Profilo Telra has selected Cirrus Logic Inc.'s (Nasdaq: CRUS) DVD Recorder Reference Design integrating Cirrus' flagship CS98200 DVD processor, CS92288 audio/video (A/V) codec, the CS5333 analog-to-digital (A/D) converter and the CS4362 six-channel digital-to-analog (D/A) converter for its new line of sub-$400 DVD recorders. Profilo will unveil the standalone DVD recorders and TV-integrated DVD recorder units at the Internationale Funkausstellung (IFA) Electronics Show — the world's largest consumer electronics exhibition — Aug. 29 through Sept. 3 in Berlin.
The Cirrus® DVD recorder integrated silicon/software reference platform provides Profilo with a complete audio, video and software solution for mass-market delivery quickly and affordably. The CS92288 provides both audio and video real-time encoding in a single, highly integrated device, supporting the MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 digital-video standards as well as Dolby® Digital and MPEG digital-audio standards.
"Cirrus has clearly established itself as a pioneer of DVD recorder technology. Not only has Cirrus proven its technical leadership but also it is committed to establishing close relationships with manufacturers that enable cost advantages and speed to market. Together, those factors made our decision to choose Cirrus an easy one," said Burak Ceylander, general manager of Farimex Istanbul Liasion Office, a partner company of Profilo Telra.
Cirrus' CS98200 DVD processor is the industry's highest performing DVD processor, supporting such capabilities as DVD-Audio. In addition, the Profilo DVD recorders leverage Cirrus' leading audio solutions by incorporating the CS5333 A/D converter and the CS4362 six-channel D/A converter.
DVD recorders and other devices that can record digital content are expected to become the fastest growing segment in digital entertainment during the next several years, with expected unit sales of up to 32 million by 2006 (source: IDC). These devices will allow consumers to upgrade more than 30 years of VCR technology and begin to store and view content in the digital domain. Cirrus' reference platform is designed to help customers such as Profilo Telra drive volume production of more affordable DVD recording products.
"The Profilo Telra product launch is especially exciting because it introduces the Cirrus DVD recording platform to European markets, where consumer demand for competitively priced, high-quality DVD recorders is expected to be very strong. The Profilo Telra selection of the Cirrus complete DVD recorder hardware/software reference platform reinforces our market leadership in +RW, the dominant DVD Recorder standard in Europe," said Brian Heuckroth, vice president of DVD Recording Marketing, Cirrus Logic.
