Consumer Electronics Benefit from Cirrus Logic Surround-Sound Codec

8/29/2003 - Cirrus Logic Inc. (Nasdaq: CRUS) announced a new family of innovative, cost-effective surround-sound CODECs, the CS42416, CS42426, CS42418 and CS42428. These analog audio solutions are designed to give OEMs a range of surround-sound CODECs that will deliver multichannel 192 kHz DVD-Audio capability while helping manufacturers accelerate their time to market in a wide range of digital consumer electronics markets, such as audio/video receivers, DVD receivers, home-theater systems and automotive audio systems.

"This family of pin-compatible surround-sound CODECs gives consumer electronics manufacturers the ability to create one board design that can be scaled to provide the right mix of target features, performance and price in their products," said Jason Rhode, director of Analog Products Marketing, Cirrus Logic. "Cirrus is the world's market leader in digital audio solutions, and with the new family we have now introduced 23 new audio products in less than 18 months."

By adopting Cirrus' CODECs for their designs, Cirrus customers can reduce overall system component count without compromising on performance. The CODECs are offered in six- and eight-channel versions, with each available in two performance categories 110 dB and 114 dB dynamic range. All channels of the digital-to-analog converters provide digital volume control and differential analog outputs. Each device supports 192 kHz, which means consumers will be able to enjoy the improved dynamic range and multichannel capabilities of the DVD-Audio standard. Each device also is equipped with a stereo analog-to-digital (A/D) converter capable of independent channel gain control for single-ended or differential analog inputs. All four devices include an integrated PLL (phase-locked loop) that provides a low-jitter system clock while reducing the need for high-speed clock wires and minimizing EMI concerns. Manufacturers can also add two more stereo A/D converters to take advantage of the variety of one-line data modes (OLMs) that are supported.

The CODECs also provide a clock-management capability that allows the user to switch between the PLL clock and an external clock oscillator. In addition, all parts have a dedicated interrupt pin that can indicate PLL unlock and A/D overflow. There is also a dedicated mute output pin and seven general-purpose output (GPO) pins that can be configured to serve a variety of purposes such as digital-to-analog mute outputs, A/D overflow indicators or GPO from the control port.

The devices have separate control and serial port supplies that operate from 1.8 V to 5.0 V, allowing the parts to match up to a DSP without the need for external level-shifting. The products operate from a 3 V to 5 V digital supply and 5 V analog supply.

Pricing and Availability
The devices are available in a 64-pin LQFP package and are currently sampling. In 10K quantities, the CS42416 is priced at $3.31, the CS42418 at $4.09, the CS42426 at $4.69 and the CS42428 at $6.35.
