8/28/2003 - Parasoft, leading provider of Automated Error Prevention software solutions, announced a practical way to improve software quality and reduce the costs associated with development, making in-house development a more viable and cost-effective alternative to outsourcing.
According to recent Gartner findings, outsourcing IT services to offshore locations is on track to increase 29 percent annually1, which could lead to a dramatic decrease in US-based IT jobs as companies strive to deliver reliable technology at a reduced cost.
While US companies have weathered significant cutbacks over the past few years, many still need to cut costs as they work to grow their businesses. According to recent estimates, software developers spend approximately 80% of their time finding and fixing bugs, and only about 20% of their time producing new code. As a result, the cost of internal software development is becoming prohibitive for many US companies.
"US IT jobs and our economy as a whole, could suffer if we don’t do something about the current state of software development," says Adam Kolawa, Parasoft Chairman/CEO. "Outsourcing may seem like an easy fix, but along with the potential loss of US jobs, it doesn’t do anything to improve the development processes or prevent the errors that are at the root of most software costs."
Kolawa parallels the current state of the software industry and the impact it could have on our economy to the situation faced by US auto manufacturers in the 1970s.
"Automakers in the 1970s experienced many quality problems with their products—just like today's software providers," says Kolawa. "Many jobs were lost to Japanese companies, who streamlined their manufacturing processes to prevent errors, rather than addressing individual defects as cars came off the assembly line. Not until W. Edwards Deming analyzed the Japanese automakers' production process, and taught US companies how to implement a strategy for producing a more reliable product and a more cost-effective production process, was the US car industry able to compete with the Japanese."
According to Kolawa, Automated Error Prevention (AEP) helps companies reduce software costs by enabling development teams to find an error only once, and improve their production process to prevent entire classes of similar errors from ever occurring. By reducing costs, "AEP enables companies to produce software using internal resources, rather than sending software projects and US dollars offshore."
