Phoenix Technologies Integrates McAfee Virus Protection in PC Core

8/26/2003 - Phoenix Technologies Ltd. (Nasdaq: PTEC), the company driving the global core system software standard in hundreds of millions of PC systems and connected digital devices for over two decades, and Network Associates® (NYSE: NET), the leading provider of intrusion prevention solutions, announced a partnership to provide the industry's first anti-virus protection for PCs residing within the core system software in desktop and notebook systems. The Network Associates McAfee® VirusScan® Online service will reside within Phoenix Core Managed EnvironmentTM (cME), making the application itself free from virus or rogue code attacks. This industry first in anti-virus protection allows PC manufacturers to provide their customers a higher level of virus defense beyond desktop protection.

Virus attacks, which can cause the loss or corruption of sensitive data and affect employee productivity, pose a serious threat to a company's IT infrastructure. According to the mi2g, Ltd., a digital risk management company, digital attacks, including worms and viruses, hit a record level in January 2003, numbering close to 20,000 and causing more than $8 billion in damages worldwide. If the current rate of attack continues, it's estimated there will be more than 180,000 digital attacks for the year, costing between $80 billion and $100 billion in damages.

"Network Associates is a leader in security software, and we are pleased to be able to offer our customers new functionality that leverages Network Associates' expertise in anti-virus. Phoenix is committed to delivering new technologies and products that enable our customers to drive revenue and build end-user satisfaction. This combination of Phoenix's innovative core systems software and Network Associates' protection continues our momentum in delivering on this commitment," said Timothy D. Eades, senior vice president and general manager, Corporate Marketing and Product Division for Phoenix.

Under the terms of the agreement, Phoenix will provide Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and systems builders a 30-day trial subscription of Network Associates' industry leading McAfee VirusScan Online service. The application will reside within a cME-enabled system's highly secure host protected area (HPA) of the hard drive, making the application itself inaccessible to viruses, hacking, or other system malfunctions. Should a virus or rogue code attack occur, users can access and restore from this protected version of McAfee VirusScan much like a "virtual CD" utilizing Phoenix FirstWareTM Vault software within the HPA. With Network Associates' anti-virus service residing within the Phoenix cME platform, Phoenix empowers OEMs and systems builders with the ability to differentiate and add value to their products, providing their customers with the ability to have a completely new and innovative level of protection against the largest security threat today.

Network Associates' McAfee VirusScan Online service provides anti-virus protection in an online service that is managed around the clock by McAfee. The service provides automated updates to all users to protect against the latest security vulnerabilities. McAfee VirusScan Online detects infected files and automatically cleans, quarantines or deletes them to ensure the computer is protected.

"Network Associates is committed to enabling companies to proactively manage security threats, both known and unknown," said Todd Gebhart, vice president with McAfee sales at Network Associates. "Network Associates' collaboration with Phoenix Technologies provides an unparalleled level of protection for all users, from the home user to the largest global enterprise."

Network Associates is the latest company to join Phoenix's Trusted Partner Network program, designed to provide independent software vendors (ISV), and channel and technology partners a profitable program to seamlessly integrate their solutions with Phoenix offerings and expand their market reach.
