8/25/2003 - SK Telecom and Nazomi Communications, Inc. announced that Nazomi's JA108 Multimedia Application Processor was selected to accelerate the performance of SKT's GIGA Platform (a cell phone specification standard for all cell phones that feature SKT's service). After extensive evaluation, SKT determined that Nazomi's JA108 is the best solution to accelerate the mobile rich media offered by SKT, proving to be the most affordable and energy efficient solution on the market.
WonHee Sull, vice president/Platform R&D Center of SK Telecom, commented, "Nazomi's JA108 has proven to be an innovative, efficient and affordable solution. It elevates the handsets designed for our networks to provide our customers with the best possible multimedia performance."
"We are honored to be included in SK Telecom's GIGA platform," said Mukesh Patel, president and CEO of Nazomi. "SKT is a global leader in providing information and telecommunication services to over 17 million customers. We are very happy that our technology contributes significantly in making the multimedia experience richer, faster and more energy efficient for SKT's customers."
About the GIGA Platform
The GIGA Platform is a next-generation mobile phone project promoted by SK Telecom. Multimedia is a buzzword in the mobile Internet market. Reflecting this trend, carriers and device manufacturers are devising releases of multi-functional, high-end phones with features such as a camera, color screen and multi-poly sound. The GIGA project is aimed to build an environment from which users can download and play the mobile rich media such as mobile 3D or mobile flash in high-end devices with an acceleration chip (i.e., Nazomi's JA108). SK Telecom, handset manufacturers, chip manufacturers, solution providers and content providers are participating in the GIGA project for promoting a mobile Internet market. GIGA phones enhance the performance of applications and dramatically increase the performance (show 5-6 times graphic processing performance over general off-the-shelf cell phones) of multimedia (2D/3D Graphics, Video, Audio, Animation and JPEG image) while reducing power consumption.
About Nazomi's JA108
The JA108 Chip, built on innovative and patented technology, is designed to offload the task of executing performance demanding multimedia applications from the baseband processor in wireless handheld devices. It accomplishes this without requiring additional memory, new tools or new porting efforts. The chip, which interfaces like a standard SRAM device, is a stand-alone Application Processor for Java and multimedia platforms that can be easily integrated into new and existing designs by using the memory bus. The chip is available in an 8x8 mm 132 ball TFBGA 0.5 mil pitch configuration as well as in 9x14 mm 123 ball TFBGA 0.5 mil pitch configuration in space saving multi-chip package stacking JA108 die with 128 Mbit of Flash and 32 Mbit of SRAM devices.
The JA108 works with any baseband processor, chipset, system on chip (SoC), or microprocessor and is transparent to existing designs and legacy operating systems. It also gives designers the freedom to choose any Java Virtual Machine (JVM) or real-time operating system (RTOS). The JA108 is designed to offer the highest multimedia application performance while balancing space, power, cost and time to market.
