8/20/2003 - Agilent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: A) and the Department of Microelectronics, Peking University (DMEPKU), announced the opening of the jointly established System-on-a-Chip (SOC) Engineering Test Center and SOC Testing Education Center in Beijing. The centers are the latest facilities developed to support policies drafted by The State Council of China to encourage development in the country's growing semiconductor market, which, according to Gartner Group, increased 38.2 percent in 2002, the largest in the Asia-Pacific region.
The SOC Engineering Test Center is equipped with the latest technology, fulfilling various industrial testing requirements that serve sophisticated scientific research projects for three key national/ministry laboratories. The Agilent 93000 SOC Series test system features a highly scalable architecture that can be upgraded and expanded to test a broad range of applications and performance specifications.
The SOC Testing Education Center leverages the strengths of DMEPKU's prominent scholars and the expertise of Agilent's experienced test engineers to deliver fundamental, key technology and application-oriented training. Thousands of semiconductor engineers are expected to benefit from the creation of the center.
"Peking University has decided to enhance its expertise in SOC test technology to address the strong industry demand for more SOC testing professionals," said Lin Jianhua, vice principal of Peking University. "To align academic research with industrial expertise, Peking University is cooperating with Agilent, the predominant SOC testing solution provider in the industry. Agilent provides not only the cutting-edge SOC testing solution, but also an experienced application development and service/support team. We believe the two centers will prosper in technical research and professional development. Peking University will provide strong support for these two centers."
"Congratulations on the opening of Peking University and Agilent Technologies' SOC Engineering Center and Education Center," said Wang Yangyuan, director of Institute of Microelectronics, Peking University; academician of the Chinese Science Academy; and chairman of Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation. "These two centers will strengthen cooperation with the industry and among academic, research and production institutes, and improve our research in SOC design and testing. As a result, we will be able to develop more professionals for this field, and advance the IC technology industry in China."
"As the leader in automated equipment test field, Agilent contributes not only the technology, but also the sophisticated business experience and professional knowledge for these centers," said Pascal Ronde, sales, services and marketing vice president for Agilent's Automated Test Group. "Together, DMEPKU and Agilent will help China achieve great success in the semiconductor industry."
Peking University founded China's first semiconductor group in its Physics department in 1958, and was one of the earliest cradles of large-scale IC development in China. The DMEPKU was later established, and marked a new stage of innovation for semiconductors in China. In the 1970s, DMEPKU introduced the first three-type 1K metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) dynamic random access memory (DRAM) device.
About the Agilent 93000 SOC Series
The Agilent 93000 SOC Series is the industry's fastest growing, lowest cost single, scalable platform with more than 550 installed systems worldwide. The Agilent 93000 SOC Series is designed to meet both the demanding performance and cost challenges of SOC testing. Models are configured to span the widest range of applications that may require ultra-high-speed digital data rates, up to 10 Gb/s, and the broadest range of mixed-signal and RF capabilities. With this range of capabilities, the 93000 SOC Series is the first choice for subcontract manufacturers (SCMs) and the preference for high-volume manufacturing.
