8/19/2003 - TimeSys(R) Corporation, a leader in Embedded Linux and development tools for embedded applications, and Kontron, a leading global embedded computer technology company, announced a partnership in which TimeSys will deliver its TimeSys embedded Linux RTOS and development tools for Kontron's CP605 CompactPCI embedded board. Combining the robust and complete communications features of Kontron's Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4-based board with the real-time performance and carrier-grade functionality of TimeSys Linux RTOS provides an ideal platform for OEMs building next-generation telecommunications and networking systems.
"The CP605 is a powerful, sophisticated CompactPCI system board," said Bryan Murphy, Vice President of Engineering, Kontron. "We worked with TimeSys to develop a comprehensive Linux development environment that leverages the many features and functions of the CP605 so that we can offer our OEM customers a simple, straightforward way to deploy a reliable carrier-grade Linux/CompactPCI solution. The CP605 and its extensive array of I/O peripherals, and TimeSys' ready-to-run support, enables our customers to spend more time developing applications and product differentiation -- delivering quality products to market faster and with less risk."
"Kontron's decision to deliver TimeSys Linux RTOS with their communications platforms is an excellent validation of the performance and reliability of our embedded Linux solutions," said TimeSys CEO Larry Weidman. "Communications systems vendors can turn to Kontron and TimeSys for complete hardware and software solutions for developing next-generation telecommunications and networking systems that require predictable, reliable performance under any load."
The TimeSys Linux RTOS software development kit (SDK) for the Kontron CP605 is available now from TimeSys and Kontron, and can be purchased at www.timesys.com/buy/kontron.
The new CP605 is a 6U CompactPCI Single Slot CPU based on the powerful Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 processor. The CP605 provides multiple configurations options, facilitating its use in high-end, harsh environment, and/or cost sensitive applications; while its 4HP design makes it ideal for space-minimized applications. It features the Intel Pentium 4 processor in a 478-pin package FC-PGA, and is available in either a high-performance version, operating at 2 to 2.4 GHz; or a low-power dissipation version, using the Mobile Pentium 4-M processor operating at 1.2 to 2.2 GHz. An on-die 512 KB full speed L2 cache facilitates maximum processor performance. It can accommodate up to 1 GB soldered DDR SDRAM, and up to 2 GB total memory with the addition of one DDR SODIMM module. Memory and graphics performance is optimized by the Intel 845GV chipset, in addition to a 400 or 533 MHz processor side bus. The CP605 is designed to provide an extensive range of connectivity options, and to protect users' investment into the future. Besides two Gigabit Ethernet ports and one Fast Ethernet port, the new board provides five USB 2.0 ports (each with 40 times the bandwidth of the commonly-used USB 1.1 interface). The CP605 also supports the PICMG 2.16 Packet Switching Backplane specification, and provides a 32-bit, 33 MHz PMC interface. It can be operated as either a system master or in passive mode (in a peripheral slot in a CompactPCI system). Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) is available as an option.
TimeSys Linux RTOS
TimeSys Linux RTOS is a complete, hardware-specific, ready to run real-time operating system and software development environment for embedded applications. At its base is TimeSys Linux, the industry's lowest latency Linux kernel offering full kernel preemption, unlimited process priorities, enhanced schedulers, and high availability/carrier-grade features. TimeSys Linux RTOS is the only true Linux distribution to add unique priority inversion avoidance mechanisms and high resolution timers to meet the performance requirements of the most demanding real-time systems. Packaged with enhanced and certified device drivers that support all I/O peripherals to the edge of the board, cross-platform GNU tool chains, a root file system and full documentation, TimeSys Linux RTOS is delivered ready-to-run on more than 65 supported hardware platforms. Engineers can improve their development experience through the use of TimeStorm Linux RTOS, which bundles TimeSys Linux with TimeSys' Windows and Linux-hosted integrated development environment and event tracing/debugging tools, TimeStorm and TimeTrace. Additionally, TimeSys Linux Reservations technologies ensure system response and predictable performance under extreme loads and overload conditions by reserving CPU cycles and network packet resources for critical tasks. Packaged in a complete, royalty-free product, TimeSys Linux RTOS helps reduce total cost of ownership, development risk, and time-to-market of advanced embedded systems.
