Cypress Executive Joins Azanda Network Devices' Board of Directors

7/31/2003 - Azanda Network Devices, an innovator in the development of silicon products for managing the way traffic is processed in access, edge and core networks, announced that Cypress Semiconductor’s executive vice president of sales and marketing, Ralph Schmitt, has joined its board of directors. With over 20 years of sales and marketing experience in the semiconductor and telecommunications industries, Schmitt will bring world-class strategic and technical guidance to Azanda.

“Ralph’s extensive experience in sales to tier-one networking and telecommunications OEMs, coupled with his management of worldwide channel operations for Cypress, is particularly valuable to Azanda as we continue to secure market traction with major networking OEMs and global distribution organizations,” stated Steve Dines, president and CEO of Azanda Network Devices. “His market expertise, combined with his experience selling to tier-one OEMs, make him an outstanding addition to our board.”

“Despite recent market corrections, increasing demand for network bandwidth and systems that accommodate greater traffic complexity are driving a continued need for innovative traffic management solutions,” Schmitt said. “Azanda’s products are geared in part toward extracting more performance out of existing platforms — a sound approach for cost-conscious times. The company has made great progress carving out market share in a tough business, and I look forward to contributing to its continued growth as a member of the Azanda board.”

Schmitt joined Cypress Semiconductor in 1987 and is currently responsible for the company’s worldwide sales organization; its distribution, contract manufacturing and original design manufacturing (ODM) operations; and its strategic marketing, applications and marketing communications efforts. He restructured Cypress’s sales and marketing organization to align with the company’s transition from a product-based business strategy to a systems- and market-based strategy.

Schmitt returned to Cypress in 1998 after four years running an independent sales organization focused on silicon-based solutions. Rejoining Cypress, Schmitt assumed responsibility for the company’s segment sales and marketing function. In this role, he grew sales and market share significantly with Cypress’ large networking and telecommunications customers, including Alcatel, Cisco, Ericsson, Lucent, Motorola, Nortel Networks and 3Com.

“I have closely watched the progress Azanda has made with their many tier-one network OEM design wins and have been impressed with the direction the company is taking with their technology,” said Schmitt. “I am looking forward to contributing to the continued growth and direction of Azanda as a member of their Board, and I hope to add to their future success.”
