7/29/2003 - TimeSys(R) Corporation, a leader in Embedded Linux(R) and development tools, announced a technical agreement with IBM to deliver TimeSys Linux RTOS and TimeSys' Linux- and Windows-hosted development tools on IBM's PowerPC(R) 440 family of System-on-a-Chip embedded processors. Additionally, TimeSys Linux was awarded IBM's "Ready for IBM Technology" (RFIT) designation, signifying that TimeSys Linux has been validated to work with IBM's PowerPC 440GP and award winning 440GX processors. TimeSys' support for IBM's PowerPC 440GP and 440GX reference platforms offers IBM customers a complete line of TimeSys Linux software development kits (SDKs) for developing advanced embedded applications with the industry's only single-kernel Linux real-time operating system (RTOS).
"This announcement offers our customers a real-time Linux solution for developing advanced, mission-critical embedded systems," said Lisa Su, director of PowerPC and emerging products, IBM Microelectronics. "With TimeSys SDKs on the IBM PowerPC 440GP and 440GX embedded boards, engineers are able to experience the programming and cost benefits of Linux. We are pleased to have TimeSys as a member of IBM's PartnerWorld program, and to have TimeSys Linux validated as a 'Ready for IBM Technology' offering."
"TimeSys Linux RTOS provides IBM's customers with a truly unique Linux solution; an out of the box experience that provides professional-grade tools and true RTOS performance with Linux," said TimeSys CEO Larry Weidman. "IBM's customers will realize immediate results, reducing development costs and time to market with a royalty-free Linux solution that is delivered ready to run on IBM hardware."
The TimeSys Linux RTOS software development kit for IBM's 440GP is available now from TimeSys and can be purchased online at www.timesys.com/buy/ibm. TimeSys Linux for the 440GX will be available in September.
TimeSys Linux RTOS
TimeSys Linux RTOS is a hardware-specific, royalty-free Linux real-time operating system and software development environment for embedded applications. At its base is TimeSys Linux GPL, the industry's lowest latency open source Linux kernel offering full kernel preemption, unlimited process priorities, enhanced schedulers, and high availability/carrier-grade features. TimeSys Linux RTOS is the only single-kernel Linux distribution to add unique priority inversion avoidance mechanisms and high resolution timers to meet the performance requirements of the most demanding real-time systems. Packaged with enhanced and certified device drivers that support all I/O peripherals to the edge of the board, cross-platform GNU tool chains, a root file system and full documentation, TimeSys Linux RTOS software development kits (SDKs) are delivered "ready to run" on more than 65 supported hardware platforms spanning 8 processor architectures and 35 processors, including the 440GP, 440GX, and platforms running IBM's PowerPC 405GP and 405GPr processors. Additionally, TimeSys Linux Reservations technologies ensure system response and predictable performance under extreme loads and overload conditions by reserving CPU cycles and network packet resources for critical tasks. Engineers can improve their development experience through the use of Professional Edition SDKs, including TimeSys' Windows- and Linux-hosted integrated development environment and event tracing/debugging tools, TimeStorm and TimeTrace. Packaged in a complete, royalty-free product, TimeSys Linux RTOS for the 440GP, 440GX, 405GP and 405GPr helps reduce total cost of ownership, development risk, and time-to-market of advanced embedded systems.
IBM's Ready For IBM Technology
IBM's Ready for IBM Technology solutions are designed to help OEM customers speed time to market, reduce development risk, lower development costs, and improve return on investment. The Ready for IBM Technology mark identifies solutions that have been tested and validated for compatibility with IBM Microelectronics products by the solution developers and assures that these solutions are compatible with IBM Microelectronics products. The support of third-party software, hardware and service providers helps IBM expand its technology appeal to OEMs by bringing additional value to the solution a customer purchases.
IBM Business Partners who are validated will be marketed visibly in the Global Solutions Directory http://www.software.ibm.com/solutions/isv - making it easier for customers to find solutions quickly and easily with the designation "Ready for IBM".
About IBM Microelectronics
IBM Microelectronics is a key contributor to IBM's role as the world's premier information technology supplier. It develops, manufactures and markets state-of-the-art semiconductor and interconnect technologies, products and services. IBM Microelectronics activities are focused in three major areas: custom application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) chips, PowerPC-based standard chip products, and high-tech foundry services. Its superior integrated solutions can be found in many of the world's best-known electronic brands.
IBM is a recognized innovator in the chip industry, having been first with advances like more power-efficient copper wiring in place of aluminum, faster silicon-on-insulator (SOI) and silicon germanium transistors, and improved low-k dielectric insulation between chip wires. These and other innovations have contributed to IBM's standing as the number one U.S. patent holder for 10 consecutive years.
