7/23/2003 - Agilent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: A) and Tiburon Design Automation Inc. (Tiburon-DA) announced an agreement to integrate Verilog-A modeling technology from Tiburon-DA into the Agilent RF Design Environment (RFDE) and Agilent Advanced Design System (ADS) software packages. The addition of Tiburon's Verilog-A compiler technology is expected to enable analog, RF, microwave, and mixed-signal system designers to use Agilent's industry-leading simulation tools to more quickly develop highly accurate analog behavioral and compact device models that simulate at speeds comparable to C-based models.
"Integrating Verilog-A technology into our Advanced Design System and RF Design Environment platforms is expected to enable RF model developers to create and distribute models to design teams more efficiently," said Marc Petersen, marketing manager, Agilent EEsof EDA division. "We plan to provide more simulation choices to RF designers by making it possible to use existing Verilog-A model libraries with our simulation tools."
Verilog-A is a high-level, industry-standard modeling language used to create behavioral and device models for verification of RFIC and MMIC designs for products such as cellular phones, pagers, wireless and broadband networks, and radar and satellite communications systems. Verilog-A-based models can be used with simulators from a variety of EDA (electronic design automation) tools providers. Verilog-A is used by semiconductor foundries to create models that conform to foundry processes and can be used in many types of simulations.
Tiburon-DA's Verilog-A technology contains an efficient compiler that allows fast Verilog-A simulations. The compiler implements the OVI Verilog-A 2.0 standard and generates compiled code that achieves simulation speeds comparable to C-based models, allowing designers to develop complex analog models more quickly with less effort while maintaining simulation performance. Support for Tiburon-DA's Verilog-A technology in ADS is expected to allow designers with existing Verilog-A model libraries to access best-in-class simulation technologies from Agilent, as well as to quickly develop new libraries of Verilog-A-based models for use in design and simulation.
"Agilent's clear market leadership in RF simulation, combined with Tiburon-DA's recent innovations in compiler technology, will open the door to widespread use of Verilog-A in RF and microwave design," said Patrick O'Halloran, vice president of engineering, Tiburon Design Automation. "Our technology allows Verilog-A to replace C or proprietary HDLs as the language of choice in analog model development, and provides a path to analog model compatibility across simulation platforms -- a long-standing problem in the industry."
Agilent expects to deliver Tiburon-DA's integrated technology as a new product to customers within six to nine months, and plans to begin testing prototype code with key customers during the fourth quarter of 2003.
