Microchip Unveils Kit for Adding RF Technology to Embedded Designs

7/22/2003 - Microchip Technology Inc., a leading provider of microcontroller and analog semiconductors, introduced the rfPICTM Development Kit 1, providing design engineers with an easy way to evaluate low-power radio frequency (RF) communication links for embedded control applications based on the Company’s rfPIC12F675 Flash microcontroller plus UHF RF transmitter, and the rfRXD0420 receiver device.

Designed to work in tandem with the popular PICkitTM 1 Flash Starter Kit, the rfPIC Development Kit 1 consists of transmitter and receiver modules supporting the 315MHz and 433MHz frequencies. The receiver modules, featuring the rfRXD0420 device, plug directly into the PICkit 1 development board for demonstration and development. The modules are available separately so designers can create several prototypes based on the same module without having to develop an actual RF design. All the design files are available, offering users the ability to migrate the module design into the application for lower cost volume production.

The self-contained rfPIC12F675 transmitter modules are based on a PICmicro 20-pin Flash microcontroller that features an integrated UHF RF transmitter, and support the same frequency and modulation formats as the receivers. The transmitter modules feature button inputs for remote control functions and analog input to allow the evaluation of the analog-to-digital converter peripherals on the microcontroller. Code development is performed with Microchip’s MPLAB® Integrated Development Environment, and programming the microcontroller is easily accomplished by plugging the modules into the PICkit 1 Flash Starter Kit.Microchip Technology introduces development tool for short range uni-directional radio frequency applications.

Target applications for the rfPIC family of products include remote control (home appliances, fan control, light control, PC peripherals); command and control (air conditioning thermostats, water irrigation systems); wireless sensors (temperature, smoke detectors, water level); home security (garage door openers, remote infrared sensors); and automotive (tire pressure sensors, remote control, remote keyless entry).

Available today with 315/433 MHz Amplitude Shift Keying, pricing is $25 for the rfPIC receiver module, $30 for the rfPIC transmitter module, and $135 for a kit that includes two receivers, two transmitters and the PICkit 1 Flash Starter Kit.
