TI Launches 2MSPS, 16-Bit SAR Analog-to-Digital Converters

7/16/2003 - Texas Instruments (TI) Incorporated (NYSE: TXN) introduced a pair of 2MSPS (mega samples per second), 16-bit successive approximation (SAR) analog-to-digital converters (ADC) from the company´s Burr-Brown product line. Significantly increasing the sampling rate of the industry´s already fastest 16-bit SAR converter portfolio, the devices target advanced applications requiring high speed and high resolution, such as medical imaging, portable medical instruments, high-speed data acquisition, automated test equipment, communications and optical networking.

The ADS8411 and ADS8412 feature 16-bit no missing code performance, 175mW (milliwatts) power dissipation, and 86dB and 90dB signal-to-noise ratio, respectively. These data converters offer designers a complete solution by integrating an internal reference and reference buffer.

"TI has once again proven leadership in data converter technology by extending our own record for the fastest 16-bit SAR ADCs on the market. No other 16-bit SAR converter achieves 2MSPS," said Tony Chang, strategic marketing engineer for TI's data acquisition products.

SAR-based architecture, in contrast to high-speed pipeline and delta-sigma architectures, has the advantage of no latency conversion, which is ideal for multiplexed or servo-control applications. Additionally, the DC performance of these devices, especially offset and offset drift, is far superior to other high-speed ADCs currently available.

Pin-Compatible Portfolio for Easy Upgrade
All members of TI´s high-speed 16-bit and 18-bit ADC family are offered in pin-compatible packages, providing designers with a comprehensive upgrade path from 1.25MSPS to 2MSPS and from 16-bit to 18-bit resolution.

The ADS8411 offers a unipolar, single-ended input range, while the ADS8412 uses unipolar, differential inputs with a bipolar range, which are common to many high-speed ADCs. Both devices offer a full 16-bit interface as well as an 8-bit interface option which allows data to be read with two 8-bit cycles, if more suitable to the application.

Available Today
The ADS8411 and ADS8412 come in a 48-lead TQFP package, and are available now from TI and its authorized distributors. The ADS8411 is priced from $20.95 in 1,000 piece quantities. The ADS8412 is priced from $21.95 in 1,000 piece quantities. All prices are suggested resale. Evaluation modules (EVMs) are also available.
