7/15/2003 - Adding further momentum to the arrival of a new class of consumer-friendly, affordable combination DVD players/digital video recorders, China's BBK Electronics Corp. has developed a hard-disk-drive-based personal video recorder (PVR)/DVD player based upon a comprehensive suite of audio and video semiconductors, including the CS92288 audio/video (A/V) codec and the CS98000 DVD processor from Cirrus Logic, Inc. (Nasdaq: CRUS). BBK's new DR9907 is the forerunner of a new product category that combines popular digital entertainment features into a single, compact and affordable consumer device. The product will be marketed and distributed under the Philco brand by major consumer electronics retail chains such as Sears, Liverpool and Carrefour in Mexico, and the Lafayette brand in the United States and Europe.
The Cirrus CS92288 allows the DR9907, which features a 40-gigabyte hard disk drive, to offer up to 41 hours of high-quality digital video encoding of content, such as broadcast television, with popular viewing control features such as the ability to pause and replay live broadcasts. The advanced A/V compression capabilities of the codec also enable consumers to determine video quality based upon available hard drive storage availability.
The CS92288 provides both audio and video real-time encoding in a single, highly integrated device, supporting the MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 digital-video standards as well as Dolby® Digital and MPEG digital-audio standards. The CS98000 DVD processor, which features dual 32-bit MIPS processors, provides MPEG-2 video decoding and audio decode support for Dolby Digital, DTS®, MPEG stereo and MP3 content. BBK's DR9907 also leverages Cirrus' leadership audio solutions, including the CS4360 digital-to-analog converter, the CS5331A stereo analog-to-digital converter and the CS4955 NTSC/PAL digital video encoder.
"DVD players are a major product category for BBK, and we wanted to reinforce our leadership in this market with a product that also offers the very popular time-shift features found in stand-alone PVR set-top boxes," said Leo Lee, director of Export Sales, BBK. "Cirrus Logic's CS92288 and CS98000 chips and complete hardware/software reference design made it cost effective for us to produce such a product, and anyone looking for a mid-range DVD player can now also experience the viewing control and storage of digital video previously available only on dedicated PVRs."
"We welcome BBK to our growing customer base for digital video recording solutions," said Jack Guedj, vice president of Video Products, Cirrus. "We are pleased to have our CS92288 MPEG A/V codec and our CS98000 DVD decoder power BBK's mid-range DVD player, incorporating PVR/time-shift capability into a single box. The CS92288 and CS98000, integrated into Cirrus' reference design platform, enable consumers to benefit from all the standard PVR features without the need for an extra set-top box and without monthly subscription fees. BBK's adoption of a complete set of Cirrus audio and video chips showcases Cirrus ability to provide compelling total entertainment or what we call 'Total-E' solutions."
Production of the BBK DR9907 is scheduled for mid-July 2003.
