Fujitsu, Motorola Bring Fingerprint Authentication to PDA's

7/11/2003 - Fujitsu Microelectronics Asia Pte Ltd, one of the leading suppliers of Biometric Fingerprint Sensors and Motorola Semiconductors Hong Kong Ltd, one of the world leaders in micro-processors, announced a co-operation in the development of an Advanced PDA Reference Solution supporting Biometric Fingerprint Authentication.

The newly developed Advanced PDA platform combines Motorola Dragonball i.MX processor, MC9328 and Fujitsu Solid State Fingerprint Sensor, MBF200 to provide an Advanced PDA solution which boasts a personalised and secured way of accessing all information in the up-and-coming e-commerce environment.

Fujitsu's MBF200 features a 256 x 300 pixel sensor of 500dpi resolution. This allows a capture of a clear image with single touch fingerprint authentication for all users. The sensor is further protected with an ultra hard, patented, scratch proof protective coating The unique Automatic Finger Detect (AFD) circuit and low power consumption will allow users to operate the PDA without any worries on the power supply. Hence, this very thin 1.4mm profile sensor is an ideal peripheral to be integrated into an Advanced PDA.

Speed is one thing but Smart speed is everything. DragonBall i.MX series of processors provides Smart Speed with no compromise between system performance and power consumption. With an extensive development suite and reference platform support from Motorola, it helps customers quickly turn designs into a real product in very short time.

"Fujitsu is pleased to be able to work with Motorola's DragonBall i.MX processor to support Fujitsu Fingerprint Sensor. The ARM based i.MX processor which supports various operating systems and its Smart Speed feature has proved to be an ideal candidate for this heavy image processing feature. I am equally impressed with the extensive development suite and reference platform support from Motorola. It has enabled the design partner to complete the reference solution in a shorter period of time than expected." said Satoru Igarashi, President of Fujitsu Microelectronics Asia Pte Ltd.

"This represents an important new enhancement in the already feature-rich i.MX family of applications processors," said Kenny Cheung, Asia Pacific Region General Manager for Motorola's Wireless and Mobile Systems Group. "We are excited to be partnering with Fujitsu because they offer robust technology which really takes security to a whole new level. Consumers will be very satisfied with the end experience."

This Advanced PDA reference solution will be available from Motorola and Fujitsu.
